Resume References

I am trying to brush up my resume. After reading a few sites, and remembering what I learned in High School (6 years ago), there seems to be some conflicting information to adding job references.

Back in high school during Personal Planning, we were taught that you always have your references on your resume, let alone having everything on one page. Now from what I've seen on a few websites that you should not include your references. In fact you should have all the references on another page, and give it to them upon request.

With this conflicting information, I have no clue on how present my references.

Also do people still keep references down to 1 page?

Thanks!

[edit] i would also like extra insight from HR personnel regarding resume references.

use headers and footers to put "Reference Upon Request" in grey at the very bottom of your resume. And centre it if you wish

I would make no mention references at all on the resume, not even a available upon request.

References are usually only used when they have made a final decision and want to make sure you're not a total retard as it is one of the least reliable methods of judging a potential employees performance.

If they want them, they will ask for them.

Definitely the best option. By leaving that there, you allow employers to know that you have references readily available.

imo, the resume is suppose to "sell" you. Saying you have references does not help in accomplishing that. The resume is suppose to highlight your skills, experience, and background, specifically those pertaining to the position you are applying for.

There's no need in adding "References Available Upon request" anywhere on your resume, as that will take up additional room to add other information that is more important and valuable that can potentially get you that job. If they want your References, they will ask you, regardless of whether you list that on your resume.

There is no right way or wrong way to do your resume.
But keep in mind, most of the time you are competing with other people for the job and why would you hurt your chances by not mentioning references, even though misteranswer is right about references being unreliable.

It takes very little room to right references available upon request.

Thanks for your response guys. I believe, i'll be adding the "references available upon request". Sometimes, they might not call your references, but reply on your current/previous employers for an accurate assessment.

Also, many employers these days don't provide references due to liability reasons, so keep that in mind.

Your resume doesn't necessarily need to be only one page long. But just make sure the first
page has everything you need to sell you for that particular position/job you are applying for.

Back in highschool, you probably didn't have much experience, but now adays, it's tough to fit
everything in one page if you've had several different jobs.

best thing to do is dont include the references,
but when you get called in for an interview, make sure you bring a copy of your resume as well as a list of references, by the end of the interview a good indicator as to whether they are interested in you or not is if they ask you for a reference list
