Get rid of the instigator penalty and it will change the way they play. They do dirty shit or take liberties they'll get their face pounded in.

With or without instigator penalty, every half decent roster will always have 1 or 2 enforcers to run interference; whether its for your skill players or your "avery/ott/etc." type of players.

It's what these guys (enforcers) are getting paid half a Million plus to do.

Somewhat agree with this. I have played goalie in both contact and non contact leagues. Seen way more dirty stuff in the non contact league that didnt allow body checking or fighting. Had a guy on my team swing at a guys head, when the guy dropped he kepting hitting the guy with his stick.

The evidence is even prevalent with the different styles in Canadian junior hockey, the QMJHL has less hitting and fighting compared to the WHL and OHL yet the instances of violence which get followed by assault charges is far higher then any of the other leagues, and suprise!... Patrice Cormier is in the QMJHL. I'm sorry but when Phaneuf was on patrol for the Red Deer Rebels someone like Cormier would have thought twice about doing something as disgusting as he did.

cos he did something thats allowed in hockey. its an infraction but is part of the game. anything that is a part of the game should not involve cops ie. fighting, hit from behind, slashing. all these are considered penalities within the game no matter the severity. pro hockey is a goon sport and gets very little respect for good reasons. dont get me wrong, i been playing hockey for 15 years and still do but at the pro level its just plain dirty and has no sportsmanship at all

It's not the same though. You touched Gretsky back in the day and you got smashed right then and there, your enforcer took a penalty and that was the end of it. It's totally different now, you can take liberties and you don't have to answer the bell you just stand there, take a punch and the other guy will get a 5 minute penalty, tossed from the game and possibly a fine.

Basically what you have is enforcer vs enforcer as opposed to enforcer vs offender unless of course the offender is a fighter but they usually aren't. The way it is right now players like Ott, Cooke and Ruutu can run around doing dirty shit and not have to answer for it if they don't want to. Just the opposite since they can do something dirty and then if they get attacked just stand there, take a punch and draw a penalty from the other team, powerplay is the reward.
