BCIT Eletronics Technician Common Core

Anyone taken this 1 year intro program? it branches out to 5 different 2nd year programs, like telecom technician, wireless communication tech, etc.

i'm currently on the wait list for the next intake, but i'm in somewhat of a dillema in my life just wondering if anyone has gone through this program?

If it's anythign like my program right now, then its a lot of hard work.. Common core is pretty much the same as ECET, minus the Math and Science/Physics/Chem..

I took it and then I took the telecommunications option.

It is definitely not a lot of hard work. Just a lot of easy work.

common core is harder than the 2nd year options IMO other than wireless

tho now common core is easy as shit as they dropped the pass rate to 60% cause there was a class of dumbass where 80% of the class would of failed if it werent for the drop in pass rate

most programs droped their pass rate to 60% cuz the drop rate was so high

I think 60% is wayyy to low. takes no work to pass the class then

I think that was the class I was in, I actually only finished level 1 of common core, lots of math to do, I had to drop out cuz of personal reasons, I would go back and finish if I didn't need to work or had money to go back.

azn_boi_128 took it, and went to a 2nd year program as well. Ask him about it.

How was the overall experiance?

the only thing i'm worried about in terms of academics is math, i fucking suck at math and had to take the equivalencey test to get into the program, is there alot of math?

did you learn alot? does it apply to work?

i'd like to know your guys who took it just overall impression and what its like, does it prepare you for a job outright?

also what 2nd year program did u get into? i'm looking at either wireless or telecom

i'm glad some people have taken it, i've got some time to make a decision but from what ive read and seen regarding this program i think it's for me.

It wasn't that bad but the lectures are dry and you will want to kill yourself if you aren't prepared.

Lots of Math but its not tough math I would say. All you really need is to be able to understand the formula given to you

I wouldn't say you are 100% prepare as each job is different but I was more or less ready for what the job had in store

Telecommunication was what I took after. I highly recommend you NOT take wireless as that is a very niche market with limited jobs as well as it is the HARDEST of all 2nd year options. All the other options are easy to pass other than Wireless.

Here are the pros and cons of each option

CBE: 100% chance of getting a job but pay sucks and you gotta wear a suit every monday (or was it friday)

Wireless: Very specialize and it will be the future however very few jobs and lots of competition. Most wireless guys end up getting telecom jobs

Avionics: This is just a cool fuckin job IF you can find one

Telecom:Lots of jobs but lots of those jobs are dead end ones (cabling)

Instrumentation: This is were the money is $$$ but chances are you will never find a job in Vancouver, you will have to move up north or to the middle east

Yep, I knew that I was going to choose Telecom as my option so I power sent my resume even before I finished Common Core

Anybody able to hook me up with a job for Telecom? Everywhere I look it's like they want "5 years of experience"

i finish the common core but didnt not proceed with 2nd year...

my buddy finished telecom 4 or 5 years ago, he said he cant find a telecom job because most of the people are looking for 5 or more year of experience.

Personally i think he is just lazy to really look for one.

oh... another buddy finished CBE while on waitlist for avionics

He now completed both and have 2 diplomas in hand. He couldnt find any jobs for CBE, but as soon he finished avionics, people hiring him from overseas.

I also have a classmate that went to wireless option, the last time i talked to him, he was working on fire&safety equipments because he couldnt find a wireless related jobs out there either.

is the education you get a fairly broad one in the common core? like do u have some skills in many fields?

I'm in common core lvl2 right now going to lvl3 in 2 weeks. All I can say is I am struggling with lvl2, lots of concepts which have to be explained by the instructor (mine sucks at explaining). Math part wasn't difficult, but its just the concepts that are difficult to grasp if you just read off the textbook.

I'm going to Avionics so pass rate for me is 70% for both theory and practical, not combined. The 60% passing grade isn't difficult to get since it's averaged mark of theory and practical.

common core is just basic knowledge and whatnot with electronics, you learn alot about different types of circuits and amps.

it pretty much goes like this

lvl 1: basic circuit boards, components and basic troubleshooting
lvl 2: complex circuits, amplifiers, and complex troubleshooting
lvl 3: programming

anyone that really wants a job in telecom can always go work for lts however you will be a contractor and its piece work

there are not many avionic jobs out there

last time i took common core was 6 years ago. I remember they taught you broad infomation throughout the course, from calculating resistance, voltage to soldering (which was fun, i enjoyed it) to measure wave length ...

I enjoyed the course, instructor and especially you're in a class with the same 25-30 people can be pretty fun as well.

in terms of skills, i have to be honest with you that you wont get much out of the common core.

There might be more useful skills once you get into the 2nd year, but again... i never proceed the 2nd year so i wouldnt know

I can tell you there are more Avionic jobs then AME:M jobs because I got laid off from my Maintenance job earlier this year. My current employer is paying me to go through the Avionics course, so there is a demand for Avionic guys. When I was looking for work, there was atleast 3 employers looking for Avionic Apprentices.
