Full size Laptop vs. Netbook + 20" LCD mon

Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy a setup for my dad. All he does is msn, facebook, surfing, PPS, youku, online streaming movies (hooking it up with his HDTV), shockwave/flash facebook games, yahoo MJ and chess games etc.

He goes on vacation every 5 months and would like to bring it along with him. So desktop isn't a choice.

I'm debating to get him a full size 15 laptop OR a netbook hooked up to a bigger LCD (20+").

The reason hooking the netbook up to a bigger lcd is because his eyes aren't as good as he was :p So a bigger LCD with bigger TEXT is a big plus for him.

Well, what do you guys think?

With a buget of $700 tax incl. (if possible) and under

1. What are my choices on laptops 14 to 15"+?

2. And how about the netbook + LCD hookup ( I'm willing to spend a bit more on this combo, given the LCD is a bit more expensive)

3. I'm in HK right now, i can shop for him here too if it lowers the cost. If not, i'm been away from van for quite some time. What shops do you guys goto now? I use to goto ncix and Skinnypupp :p

Thanks for all your help :)

i dont recommend the netbook and lcd combo.
if hes going on vacation, is he going to carry the lcd with him?
since ur considering the netbook-lcd combo im assuming most of the time its going to be stationary at home.
the only good thing about netbook is that its mobile. mobility doesnt seem to be the main purpose for your dad

definately get the 15".

Alright, i guess you guys are right. So, i might go with a 15"+ laptop.

Please let me know what are the choices, so i can shop around.

I like the asus that was suggested by Razor. But a little over budget. The ASUS UL50Vt is $6500HKD in HK. Is it cheap in Van? i bet not tho.

What are some other choices :) Thanks!

if it's a dad, usually u can cross out netbook due to eyesight. unless he has good eyesight... lol

I would usually say the the asus UL series, but most of these 'dad'/ parents users won't appreciate the long battery life, switchable graphics etc.

ask him what's important. i'm guessing the screen, weight, and ergonomics more than anything else. since almost anything run your yahoo flash games decently.

This is what I've been recommending to friends' parents who want a basic laptop capable of doing most parent-ish stuff. :)

you can also look at ones with the m300 processor and ati graphics for around $500
the m300 is not bad at all for the price when u look at some mobile cpu charts

try to find ones with at least 3gb ram, look at fs, bb, and ncix, and shopbot.ca to pm at ncix

Not if you get used. Even then, ASUS has international warranty for a year and if the laptop was registered within 60 days, it gets extended for two years. Not to mention accidental and liquid damage.

Check out MSI's CR440

http://asia.msi.com/index.php?func=p...=&prod_no=1835

Bought this in HK at Golden (SSP) for around HK$3500 (less than CA$500) back in August. It's got independent graphics chip and everything a girl/parent needs, comes with Windows as well. :lol Pretty sure that it's even cheaper now...
