why do people like feeling envied by others?

I was just thinking, having something others want usually doesnt make me feel better about myself.
this thought partially spawned from the koenigsegg thread, and partially from somethign ive been thinking about for a while.

if theres something i have that others want, or if i get complimented on something, 9/10 it makes me feel like shit, like i wish i didnt stand out because of it.
example:
if you have a nice car, lets say a porsche. to hear your friends say that your ride is so awesome and they wish they could have a car like that, and all they drive is the family honda civic, would not put me on a high horse. discuss? hyde would you like to chime in please about how your enzo makes you feel?

different strokes for different folks

some people like being envied, makes them feel superior
some people dont

all depends on what kinda person you are.

i totally agree with you Unit, makes me feel guilty when something like that happens. on the other hand, i also know this guy who has a history of getting things that others want. for example i'll tell him about something that im planning to buy or want in the future, a few days later he buys it and shows it off. i don't mind it, but its weird. but your right van_driver, some people just enjoy that shit. i guess

well im not saying im one to be envied in a lot of respects. everyone is envied by others in some way, one way or another, and looked down on by others in another way. i just dont understand why people work so hard to try to get other ppl to want what they have.

let me quote from where i got this idea in the first place. from the book 'tuesdays with morrie':
"if you're trying to show off to people at the top, forget it. they will look down at you anyhow. and if you're trying to show off for people at the bottom, forget it. they will only envy you. status will get you nowhere.

Isnt it the other way around ? Power of possession if it is owning something.
Wouldnt possession of power mean possessing power instead of items of want?

read up on philosophy/political thought and you will get a variety of perspectives pertaining to human nature

common arguments: we are all greedy in nature, sociable, self-maximizing/rational power seekers, are placed under conditions where we are forced to be this way in order to protect our own interests and to guarantee our own security... often beyond what is necessary because we operate with a "if I don't aim to achieve it someone else will and it will put them on a competitive advantage over me thus threatening my survival"type of mentality... its like a vicious unending cycle until we die

i get that feeling too... it makes me feel uneasy when people envy my possessions because they don't really have anything to do with me personally but ask yourself do you feel the same way when people envy your qualities? or your work ethic or when they acknowledge and respect something you have worked towards and earned? i feel good about those things....

hk20000 01-25-2010 11:11 PM

People want to have authority... Being envied by others means that whatever comes out of your mouth/keyboard gets more e-cred.

so keep on e-thuggin' it's an instinct passed down from the cavemen's age.
