Weirdest speed trap - King Edward/Oak

There was a minivan parked on the side with its rear door up and a large speed display inside. A copy was in the drivers seat radaring people as they passed.

I was expecting more cops further ahead pulling people over... yet none.

Very weird, not sure what the point was, to waste a cop's time sitting in a minivan? Has anyone seen this before?

cardboard cop?

Solo_D33A 01-23-2010 07:26 PM

just trying to slow people down... showing that they aren't just know to give tickets so we aren't as angry at them, it's good thinking... good public relation act.

I can understand that, yet there's better ways than parking a van and paying a cop to sit there for hours. Why not use the orange trailers with the sign that displays your speed when you pass? That's why I commented its weird.

Do you know for sure that its a cop? Most of them work at icbc

sometimes they sit a mannequin in the car just to fool people. ive seen this for real.

Cereal Killer 01-23-2010 10:19 PM

The "speed trap" was meant to encourage people to pay attention to their speeds and slow down; it's more of a warning to speeders.

As for the people inside the vehicle, they would most likely be volunteers from the regional community policing centre because getting paid to simply sit in a car for hours seems to be not worth the money.

haha reminds me of the time when some guy was paying TOO MUCH attention to the speed indicator and rear-ended a van waiting to turn left

slammer111 01-24-2010 05:27 AM

^ Or that retard on Highway 99 in the Nissan who freaked out when he saw the cop (speed trap?) and decided to pile head-on into the centre barrier or the cliff beside the road or both. :D

OP, which direction were you heading?

East on King Ed. It was gone 3 hours later when we returned from Richmond.

That could make sense. The driver was wearing the typical yellow reflective vest that cops wear at speed traps, yet I couldn't confirm if it was a cop.

+1. If you look closely, it will say VOLUNTEER or COMMUNITY ENFORCEMENT or something similar on their outfits.

Just like the one on the Shell road overpass after Oaks bridge after heading into Richmond, only that I've seen a cop car parked right after the overpass:haha:
