if that were true, apple could have just released the thing unlocked. but they had an exclusive contract with AT&T

By whom do you mean the average iPhone user? I would think 75% of the people would at least know the term jailbreak, even if they havent executed themselves. I don't know if you have one or not, but the program that this kid made for jailbreaking is less than 1mb big and jailbreaks your iphone in less than 30 seconds. Even a non tech savy person can do it. My family has 8 iphones because of him. I'd say he definitely drove up iphone sales. Just look @ his blog of people asking him to keep doing his shit. Even my dad donates money to him.

Of course, the JB community is also what's keeping everything going. Look at appulous(installous) for example. They do everything for free as well.

why wouldn't apple want to sign contracts for the rights to sell iphones? they can get an insane amount of $$ from carriers like AT&T and rogers and also release the hack after and sell even more phones to people who aren't with AT&T or rogers.

The program that you use to jailbreak the iphone now is far far far simpler then what it used to be... I still remember when the unlock first came out I have to type up commands in terminal... it takes 30mins to an hour just to unlock 1 phone...
