France partially bans the Burka

Quote:

France will today take the first step towards barring Muslim women from wearing the full veil when using public services, but will stop short of calling for an outright ban after critics argued that such a move would be socially divisive and hard to enforce.

A cross-party committee of MPs was set up last year to explore the controversial issue in France of burkas and niqabs. The committee will recommend to parliament that Muslim women should be allowed to continue covering their faces in the street.

Its final report will, however, recommend that anyone covering their face be barred from entering public sector property, including hospitals and schools, or using public transport.

...

Under the proposals, a woman who fails to remove her veil inside when using any realm of the statethose public servicin such cases would not face a fine for breaking the law, but would be refused access to the service. She would not, for instance, be allowed to collect her child benefit payments or take the bus.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has repeatedly said that the full veil "is not welcome" on French soil, is believed to favour this partial legislation, rather than more radical suggestions from recalcitrant members of his rightwing UMP party.

...

Steps to ban the burka, which have been opposed by the Muslim Council of France and other religious groups, have coincided with the French government's "big debate" on national identity. Critics of the government, from the left and right, have accused Sarkozy of encouraging dangerous rhetoric which has seen the country's 5 million Muslims become the object of increasing critiques.

...

Despite wide-ranging opposition to the garment and polls showing that most French citizens favour a ban, opinions have differed on how to go about discouraging women from covering their faces.

these women will be forced to stay @ home now

smart law....

it wasn't so long ago that french women wore veils (historically speaking) to preserve a sense of decency, purity and to bar lewd eyes; odd that they'd be so vehemently against it

Who knows , maybe with this law they'll get a chance to learn how christians from middle eastern countries feel when they're forced to obide by islamic law.

I love the advertisement at the botton right hand corner :lol

edit: aww it changed, it was a muslim woman wearing a burka.

Yes and then there was the whole feminist revolution and all that went down the crapper. Nothing like that has happened yet in the middle east.

Good on them. IMO it's for the general populations safety. What's to stop some crazy madman from dressing like a woman, covering his face and robbing a bank?

I have to take my hat off when I go into Coast Capital... Can't imagine what they would do if someone came in with a burka on.

Falcon called it!

Quote:

Two burqa-wearing robbers have held up a French post office using a handgun concealed beneath an Islamic-style full veil, court officials said.

Officials said postal office staff let the pair through the security double doors of the banking branch near Paris, believing them to be veil-wearing Muslim women.

Once inside, the pair flipped back their head coverings and pulled out a gun.

AutozamAZ-3 02-08-2010 10:55 AM

it should be a head scarf only IMO. i mean heck, you could probably hide a gun in a turban too can't you? and sikhs have one of the most biggest populations world wide. why not pick on them?
but then again, you see half the north face kids hiding maces in their jackets... like someone said above already, anything is hideable.
fuck i dont even know if what im saying is making sense anymore. damn all nighters.

^^^ odd that they grouped all forms of christianity into 1

yet split most forms of Buddhism up (by that i mean to say tenrikyo, shintoism, chinese traditional, cao dai) they're basically the same yet very distinct, i know, but so are catholics and mormons etc
