Changing LSD oil, what brand should I get?
 

So I have a 1987 Toyota Cressida with a stock LSD that's been making a bit of a whining noise over 40 km/h. I'm not sure if the PO replaced it recently, but it probably has been a while. I've heard good things about Motul 90 PA, but then again, there are a lot of other LSD oils to look at.

So what LSD oil are people running that they can rely on to do its job?

No need to buy expensive LSD oil like Motul. Find something of the equivilant type by Redline. I'm not sure which type of oil the Cressida uses in its LSD. Make sure it's the correct one. I'm certain the folks over at DK can provide a better idea on what to use.

I can never remember if LSD's are the ones that you SHOULD or SHOULDN'T get the ones with Friction Modifiers.

if it's an 87, i'd just get a normal non synthetic 80w90. if you want go ahead and get some redline.

but i'm positive manufacturer needs 80w90.

Are you asking about the diff oil or the LSD additive?

I have an IS300 w/ LSD, the dude at Lexus said I should use 75W90 GL5 with LSD additive. The LSD additive is a really small bottle thats less than 10 bucks you can buy at Lordco. You're supposed to put the whole bottle in and mix it with the oil.

I believe it would be transmissions in which some require a friction modifier.

unless you've built this car up and are racing/beating on it any 90w gear oil will work

I noticed at work. Some LSDs take the friction modifier and some don't. Depends on the manufacturer

i used gm syncromesh stuff with friction modifier on my is300 . it was good stuff.
