An RCMP officer involved in the Surrey Six investigation has been charged with fraud and attempted fraud.

Police say the five-year officer is a member of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and has been on the Surrey Six case since late 2008.

The charges arise from two overtime claims submitted in July and August 2009.

The allegation surfaced in late August 2009 and both internal and criminal investigations were launched. The member was placed on administrative duties.

On Jan. 25, Vancouver provincial Crown counsel laid two criminal charges against Const. Steve Perrault. He was served with a summons Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in court on March 18.

On Tuesday it was revealed that there have been allegations of an “inappropriate relationship” between a Surrey Six investigator and a potential female witness.

RCMP are not commenting on how the alleged relationship was discovered, other than to say the allegations arose during the first week of December. Within days, an internal investigation was launched and the officer was reassigned to administrative duties. The identities of the “seasoned officer” and the woman are not being released.

The woman was expected to testify at the trial of five alleged Red Scorpion gangsters who are charged with murdering six men in October 2007 — B.C.’s worst gangland slaying.

Wow, criminal charges for faking overtime? That's a bit harsh.

Anywhere else you'd just be fired.

This whole surrey six investigation has been a botch job by the RCMP. It should have been a slam dunk case but now there are allegations that they were recording privaleged phone calls. RCMP having sexual relations with a witness in the case and now this. I know this cant effect the outcome of the case but the recording could potentially free Jamie Bacon which would suck. Also the sexual relation with the witness is damaging to the case as well.

WAY TO GO RCMP

Its only a matter of time before all charges are dropped due to an incompetent investigation.

I feel sorry for the families of the innocent victims. They probably just want this case to end.

actually it can affect the outcome of the case

Recording phone calls is the obvious one

Fraud, faking over time, can bring into question any surveillance that is attributable to that particular officer

Sleeping with a witness may bring into question the testimony of said witness, may even though her sexual relation shouldnt bring into question her credibility you can be sure any good lawyer is going to try and push it

all of that though just depends on the defense lawyer, and most defense lawyers suck shit as these criminals aren't usually able to afford the good ones

^^^ though she was a witness, her evidence was not used when charges were brought forth. so though this incident will bring more turmoil and distrust upon the RCMP, it shouldn't affect the case against Dennis Karbovanec. also, the RCMP have said that she was actually NOT Karbovanec's ex-girlfriend.

BUT these fraud charges against the RCMP officer WILL definitely affect any case. the first thing a defence lawyer will do after this RCMP officer gives testimony will be to ask him:

"did you fraudulently claim overtime"?
"what does that have to do with this case?"
"answer the question."
"well, yes.."
"if you were lying then, how do we know that you're not lying now?"

Even if he gets off on a technicality, I doubt the UN gang will let him live for long.
