'Authentic First Nations' 2010 Olympic souvenirs made in China

Lol, ouch.

Quote:

VANCOUVER, Canada (AFP) - Canadian aboriginals eager to promote their culture at the upcoming Winter Games on their ancestral lands lamented on Wednesday that some "authentic First Nations" souvenirs were made in China, Italy or Thailand.

These include native art and traditional clothes.

Tewanee Joseph, director of the Four Host First Nations, representing area aboriginals, says it is not a problem.

"The design was created by authentic First Nations," he told AFP. "The Four Host Nations created the whole aboriginal mark of the Games and we are truly authentic aboriginal people."

But Shain Jackson, distributor of West Coast aboriginal art, disagrees.

He launched an online petition at trulyauthentic.wordpress.com to denounce foreign made souvenirs stamped with a First Nations seal and urge Games organizers to heed his concerns.

"We make authentic aboriginal products. We distributed them and the benefits go back to our communities who are the poorest and the most marginalized in Canada," said Jackson, a former aboriginal rights lawyer.

Profits from the sale of the Vancouver Games native souvenirs will be rolled into a fund to help young Canadian natives, particularly hurt by chronic health woes, poor education and unemployment, Joseph commented.

Tourists strolling around Vancouver's historic Gastown neighborhood will also find galleries filled with aboriginal sculptures and souvenir shops selling items inspired by native designs, but also made in China.

Joke. A lot of things related to the Olympics are so deceiving or not what they say they are....

slammer111 02-03-2010 05:16 PM

They better not be charging a premium price if said item is made in China but is stamped "authentic". Reminds me of that AJR post.

That really does ruin it for me. Guess I'm not buying anything this Feb.

SpuGen 02-03-2010 06:40 PM

They're just pissed that Chinese people actually made money off this shit :lol

Vansterdam 02-03-2010 07:41 PM

bengy 02-03-2010 08:30 PM

Seems fitting... Vancouver is half Chinese anyway.

shenmecar 02-03-2010 09:08 PM

pwned indeed

StylinRed 02-03-2010 09:19 PM

yeah they've been talking about this for a long time now, but no1 seems to care

I can't stand how Team Canada, or Olympic Canadian clothing isn't entirely Made In Canada... sure there are some things made here but most of the crap is made elsewhere
its ridiculous

3seriesBeeM 02-03-2010 09:23 PM

I guess its cheaper to make elsewhere therefore there profit margin will be higher. I still dont think its right to label something as authentic than have it made in china

hotong 02-03-2010 09:24 PM

haha owned

!Tigger 02-03-2010 10:39 PM

the first nations wouldnt be able to make the products as fast as china can. So whats the point if in one week

First nations can only make lets say 50 in a day
China can make 200 in a day.

StylinRed 02-04-2010 12:37 AM

^^^^ then don't market it as Authentic....

I think authentic (not replica) Team Canada jerseys are made in Quebec. They cost ~$400ish, though.

SkinnyPupp 02-04-2010 02:32 AM

I guess they can still call them authentic FN designs. If you want stuff made by real FN artists, it's not cheap! But some of them make really nice stuff.

$_$ 02-04-2010 08:03 AM

Almost everything that is being used in the olympics is NOT made in Canada. A big EFF YOU to the guy that started bashing me when I had a huge problem with the fucking 100$ flags being made in CANADA. WHAT THE FUCK NOW EH? Why don't we buy everything in Canada to stimulate the economy now ?

GLOW 02-04-2010 08:08 AM

those red $10 mits were made in china too

:)

q0192837465 02-04-2010 03:12 PM

Ppl complain when things r made in China. Ppl complain if things are not made in China but cost more.

In the end it's all about money.
