component speakers or coaxial speakers with factory tweeters??
 

I want to upgrade my factory speakers from my non-monsoon system in my 2003 jetta. I guess the factory speakers are component and have a separate woofer and tweeter. Going with new component speakers seems to be fairly pricey. Is it possible to buy coaxial speakers and just leave my factory tweets in, in combo with the new woofers?
I see the new component speakers come with a crossover, is this how it is wired in the factory set-up or would I need to buy crossovers to add?
Any suggestions or opinions on the matter would be much appreciated. I'm looking to keep the cost down but get some really nice coaxial speakers. Is this even possible or is it a wiring mess/ an audio "no no"

I would recommend against just using coaxial speakers as this is somewhat of a downgrade as far as imaging and staging goes. Having a tweeter up higher is a great way to bring the soundstage up. Using the factory tweet and putting coaxials down below will give you too much in the way of highs (too many tweeters) and will confuse the soundstage at the same time.

That said, you don't have to spend a ton on components. Our comps start at about $350 installed for some great sounding speakers that you can run off the factory deck. Of course it is much better to run a more powerful aftermarket amplifier for clarity and volume. We would use the aftermarket crossover as opposed to the factory cap on the tweet and full range on the mid.

I recommend having a listen to a few sets from the sponsors here so you can make an educated decision based on your own perceptions. :)

Exactly what he said.. :) Components are the way to go, especially if you have them in the vehicle already.
If you can't spend the cash for new components then go for a four channel amplifier properly installed and adjusted, you will notice a difference for sure.

Is there something wrong with your factory speakers?
If your factory speakers are blown then anything you add could be an improvement. If your factory speakers are fine and your looking to upgrade them, then just swapping the factory woofer for a cheap coax will be a disappointment
