Lag spikes? help

Computer in question: HP dv6424ca running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit (Turion x64 x2, 2x 1.0GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce Go 7200 graphics)

Over the past few days my computer will suddenly jam up completely, the mouse can still be moved around but everything else is stuck, sometimes it will let me continue working in the currently selected window but that's a crapshoot. When I try to use up more than 1.11GB of RAM, it jams up completely and I have to power down.

I ran a series of RAM tests, they were clean, I got Windows to scan the harddrive on boot, it was fine as well. Microsoft Security didn't detect anything. Right now I'm running on my old harddrive with the Win 7 RC and it's running fine. The only thing I can think of that I may have done wrong was install the HP graphics driver while the Nvidia one was still installed, so I went into the Device Manager, uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, and let Windows hunt down the drivers (but I installed those drivers two weeks ago and it ran fine so...)

Ideas?

TIA
