Olympic Torch

Anyone else find this an absolutely pointless thing that just wastes our tax money?

The Olympics are about bringing the community, country's and everyone together. The torch is the symbol of the hard work the athlethes, supporters and fans have done since the Olympics stared. It's about EVERYONE doesn't matter if your big, small, black and white, male and female everyone is equal and the torch is the symbol of that!!!

Tegra_Devil 02-10-2010 05:11 PM

what a nerf herder

godwin 02-10-2010 05:14 PM

I think the torch makes money, as most people buys them for $500 after their run to keep it.

they have the option to buy the torch for the price it cost to make. They don't make money from it but i'm sure donations to help the athletes are accepted.

i saw the flame, thought it was pretty cool how it traveled from Greece to here

Get this...the olympics can be described in this one quote

Amongst the turmoil in the world, it is sport that unites the world and truely brings peace

Not true. The torch run has been funded by corporations. If it were tax dollars, we would have to shut down hospitals, schools, and stop building roads and bridges. Nobody knows how much it is costing. It ain't cheap, that's for sure.

The torch run could have been simpler, if anything. Like others have said, it is too late to do anything about it.

The corporations got a lot out of it, though. It's their money.

Strange how people get so excited about the flame thing. I get the significance of the Olympic flame - the symbolism, etc. I just don't get a boner over it.

Our national anthem being played at the games when and if we win the gold on home turf. Now that'll get me going.

i watched the torch relay when it was in my neighbourhood and the streets were packed with other patriotic canadians who were out to show support for the olympics and the athletes. Personally, it gave me chills to be apart of it.

while our tax dollars surely pay for the massive police escort, i think the majority of the bill for the actual torch relay is being taken care of by RBC and Coke.

hchang 02-12-2010 08:56 PM

RBC and Coke should only take care of their part don't they? (Their trucks, employees and free produts)

I was talking about all the police escorts we're paying for.
The Olympic Cars, RVS and etc were already paid for, so I was not talking about those.

And I didn't know that the torch's were being sold for the price they were made... at least that saves us some money.

hirevtuner 02-12-2010 09:03 PM

i personally don't hate the olympics, I just hate that it is too commercialized now

but the olympics is a losing cause for a host city so that's probably why they need sponsors to at least break even in 30 years later

Nope they pay big money to sponsor the Olympics.

hchang 02-12-2010 09:07 PM

Yes, yes it does.

Welcome to BC.

I bitch about shit here and there, but after hearing the great stories from the run, I am leaning toward agreeing with some about it being a good thing. I'm not talking about The Terminator and celebrities. They can go to hell, but the heroes in our communities - small towns and cities alike. Watching them carry the torch and hearing their stories. That's cool. It brought people together. It raised national pride. It inspired many. I always had pride in our country, but this thing got the people who otherwise wouldn't have given a rat's ass come out in droves to support the games and our athletes. Not just in Surrey or Richmond, but all across this vast land of ours.

I can admit I was wrong. I saw it from my own point of view, at first, but if this run raised everybody's pride in this country, then it was well worth it.

I'm not like hard headed against the Olympics or anything, I dressed up in Red and cheered on the Olympic Envoys, but I just think that there is honestly way better usages of the money we've spent on the Olympics.

I agree. Money saved could have gone to the athletes, or even future athletes. But that's just it. Some little kid is going to be at the run with their parents and experience the excitement and maybe that's all it takes. That kid could grow up to be the next gold medalist in 12 years time.

I'm trying to look at it from all sides. That's all.............

jlenko 02-12-2010 11:01 PM

But the thing is... if that money wasn't spent on the Olympics, it WOULDN'T be spent on the kids.. or health care... or the homeless in Vancouver...

It would be spent on recovering jobs in Ontario after the factories laid everyone off.

Security 900M

Party paid by sponsors, tv, etc..

All other tax money, we get hard assets built, and some funding's from the feds. Whether or not those are worth it, it's up to you to decide.

Overall, it's a good deal cuz we get outside money to build those things we wouldn't otherwise get
