DIY Salt Corrosion repair for rims (Aluminum Lip)
 

Picked up a set of rims with quite a bit of salt burn on the aluminum lips. I decided to try to fix them up myself and did a decent job. I don't do much auto body work so I am no means an expert but this may help someone with a similar issue. I'm happy with the results, they're far from perfect but I think they're fine for everyday use.

Materials:
1 sheet of 240,400,600 grit 3M sandpaper
1 pack of #000 steel wool
1 roll of Masking tape
Mother's aluminum polish
10 hours for 4 rims =(

What they looked like when I picked them up

Step 1: Wash rims with detergent to get off all the dirt and crap
Step 2: Mask off the spokes
Step 3: Sand lip with 240 grit until all the corrosion is gone and the surface is smooth, the lip will looks super dull and scuffed up but that's okay

Step 4: Do it all again with 400 grit rims should get smoother and scratches should be less noticeable

Step 5:
One more time with 600 grit then with the steel wool, the steel wool will help produce the high gloss finish when the polish is applied. After this the rims should look pretty good still a bit bright compared to the original clear coat.

Step 6:
Rub in the mag polish with a clean cloth and feel that big grin on your face
They should look pretty much the same as the original if not better

thanks, do you recommend any other type of coating to prevent future corrosion? I just have the aluminum polish on them and I may throw on a coat of wax. Not sure if I want to shell out the cash to get them pro clear coated since they're pretty cheap rims and don't want to attempt to clear coat cause I'm sure I'll screw it up lol.
