Polo GTI

A very smart looking car, oddly enough it looks more luxurious than the forthcoming Audi A1.

[Updated] The Polo we've all been waiting for ever since Volkswagen lifted the veils off the latest generation model is a reality as the German firm has published the first official photos of the Golf GTI's smaller brother prior to its world premiere at the Geneva auto gathering next month.

The new 2010 Polo GTI packs the same 1.4-liter TSI gasoline engine with turbo- and supercharging as the Seat Ibiza Cupra with an estimated output of 180 horsepower and a hefty 250Nm or 184 lb-ft of torque, available from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm.

The hot Polo's TSI gasoline engine is linked to a compact seven-speed, twin-clutch DSG gearbox that channels drive through the front axle.

Aligned with a 1,184kg or 2,610 lbs kerbweight, the 1.4 TSI allows the Polo GTI to accelerate from rest to 100km/h or 62 mph in 6.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 228 km/h or 142 mph.

The German automaker says that the GTI model is capable of delivering a low fuel consumption of 6.0lt/100km (equal to 39mpg US or 47 mpg UK) on the combined cycle while emitting just 139 g/km of CO2.

Along with the new engine, the Polo GTI also gets upgraded suspension components and VW's version of the Ibiza Cupra's XDS self locking electronic differential.

In a similar underrated fashion to the Golf GTI, the hottest Polo sports five-spoke polished 17-inch alloy wheels in low profile tires, red brake callipers, blacked out headlamps with LED daytime running lights and the typical GTI honeycomb grille with a red frame. At the back there's a new rear bumper featuring a small diffuser and a pair of chrome-tipped exhausts.

Inside we find that a similar flat-bottom steering wheel with red stitching and the tartan cloth sport seats plus a slightly revised instrument panel with red dials.

The new Polo GTI is expected to go on sale in Europe in both three- and five-door body styles shortly after its debut in Geneva.

Too bad it doesn't look like it's coming to North America.. might compete with the Golf GTI (ala Scirocco).

Kaiten 02-18-2010 09:27 PM

Toeknee 02-18-2010 09:37 PM

twitchyzero 02-18-2010 09:42 PM

no pricing at all?
pleasee bring this to NA

roastpuff 02-18-2010 09:55 PM

crazyazn 02-19-2010 12:34 AM

Engineers used both the twin-charged 1.4-liter TSI engine and seven-speed DSG transmission from the Seat Ibiza Cupra. With steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters on the GTI, like the Spanish car, the engine utilizes a supercharger from idle to 3,000 rpm at which point the turbocharger kicks in providing 180 PS (132 kW / 178 hp) at 6,200 rpm and 184 lbs ft (249 Nm) of torque from 2,000 rpm.

0-62 mph arrives in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 142mph (229 km/h). Ride height has been dropped by 15mm, so the 17-inch wheels will look a bit snug. Stiffer springs make the suspension tighter and the car will feature the same XDS differential as the Cupra, which electronically replicates a limited slip diff.
0-3k RPM hammer down power from SC and a spooled up TC takes over.... mmm mm mmm

Same 0-100 as a MK6 for less money and better mpg. Would completely kill the MK6 if it does come to NA.

Z3guy 02-19-2010 06:29 AM

this would sell like hotcakes if it made it over to NA...2600lbs...this thing would give a Mini Cooper fits!!!

a family friend (who owns a mk5 rabbit 2.5) rented a polo when he was in europe for a holiday and he was very underwhelmed by the experience, so i'm doubtful it would do any harm to golf sales... but he said it was better than a toyota yaris.

sonick 02-19-2010 07:24 AM

Fuckin' LOVE those seats... Totally 80's euro.

!Aznboi128 02-19-2010 07:39 AM

Wolfsburg / Geneva, 19 February 2010 – The next generation of the CrossPolo is ready for new adventures. The clever compact in rugged all-terrain look is celebrating its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. After the Polo base version presented in 2009 and the Polo BlueMotion (debut in 2010) with its superior and possibly record-breaking fuel efficiency, as well as the Polo GTI now also debuting in Geneva, the CrossPolo completes the series as a fourth model. With its refreshingly cheeky design, unique world of colours and features, and a higher ride height (15 millimetre gain), the five-door is very appealing as one of the most unconventional vehicles in its class.

This all-rounder is powered by extremely fuel-efficient engines with a power range from 51 kW / 70 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS. Buyers can choose from three petrol and three common rail TDI engines. Three of the six engines can be ordered with a 7-speed DSG, like the one used on vehicles such as the Polo GTI.

Engine variety: Three petrol, three diesel and one 7-speed DSG

The six engines of the CrossPolo have power levels between 51 kW / 70 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS. The entry level among the petrol engines is represented by the 70-PS version with a 1.2 litre displacement. Following at the next level is a 1.4-litre engine with 63 kW / 85 PS. The top petrol engine is the new 1.2 TSI with the mentioned 105 PS. This turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine accelerates the CrossPolo to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, reaches a respectable top speed of 188 km/h, yet has a combined fuel consumption of just 5.5 litres of fuel (equivalent to 128 g/km CO2). The highlight here: The Volkswagen not only attains these values in conjunction with the standard 6-speed gearbox, but also with the optional 7-speed DSG, an automatic. Also deliverable as an optional DSG version is the CrossPolo with 85 PS.

Among the quietest engines of their kind are the three common rail, direct-injection turbodiesels (TDI) fitted with a particulate filter. All engines have 1.6 litre displacement and are available at the power levels 55 kW / 75 PS, 66 kW / 90 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS. All three variants need just 4.3 litres of diesel per 100 km in combined mode and emit just 113 grams CO2 per kilometre. The 90-PS version can also be combined with the direct shift gearbox as an option; in this case, combined fuel consumption is 4.6 l/100 km. All CrossPolo engines meet the limits of the Euro-5 emissions standard.

Advance sales for the new Volkswagen are beginning in march. In Germany, the CrossPolo will already arrive at Volkswagen dealers and first customers at the end of May. Right afterwards, the market launch will continue across Europe and in Japan.

I think that VW under Walter de'Silva's design language is absolutely astounding. I really hope they release the cars here.

Do you guys think that there might be a Polo-R ?

!Aznboi128 02-19-2010 03:20 PM

polo r would prob have 200hp fsi that would fly!

Onassis 02-19-2010 07:23 PM

I'm sure with a simple ECU tune the GTI would have over 200 HP. I'm more interested in an AWD system...

shenmecar 02-19-2010 10:54 PM

get rid of those fairy lamps!

otherwise a very neat little car.
