If you already have an AMD AM2 board, check to see if there is a BIOS upgrade to support AM3 CPUs ... If you do, an AM3 Quad Core is the obvious choice ...
If you need a new motherboard, CPU, and memory and have around $350 to spend, I'd probably go w/ an 4GB DDR3 (~$100), an AMD Quad Core (~$150, Phenom 945), and an AM3 motherboard ($100).
I have the 965 myself and I'm using the Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5 w/ 8GB of Corsair XMS3 1600 MHz DDR3. I paid $160 for the motherboard at the time, but it looks like it's gone up ($192 according to Pricecanada.com)
Works really well ... OCed up to 4.1 GHz 24/7 on air (Scythe Zipang 2) ... Most people seem to be able to push them to around 3.8-3.9 GHz w/ a decent motherboard and memory.
