My dell inspiron desktop from 2004 is still running strong. My dad's still using everyday as a browsing computer. It did play games quite well back in its day.
But if you want to overclock, fiddle around with the mobo, or just need to have the highest end specs or want to maximize your hardware, I'd say that building your own is much better.
Which XPS8100 are you planning to get, and what are you planning to use it for? Because the Radeon 5450 is for the lack of a better word.. pretty crappy.
got a dell laptop last april. loving it. had an HD issue, and they shipped me a replacement HD within 24hrs. had support call me 3x to help me with install (3x cuz i was busy when they called). had a follow up call about 2 weeks later. I'll recommend dell.

I have an option to change the video card to this one on the xps8100 instead:
nVidia GeForce GTS240 1024MB GDDR3
I can get that xps system for about 900 or so plus taxes
you got enough there to do everything on your list and then some plus that one shouldn't have to be upgraded for awhile as well.

5450 is not for gaming at all ...
If your GF does Photoshop, go w/ the Nvidia card for better performance ...
Edit: Nevermind, $120 can get you a much better aftermarket card than the GTS240 ... Just take the 5450 and give it away or sell it for like $20 or something ...
It's hard to beat dells service. I've sent my laptop back to them for repairs a couple times. I would send it Monday and get it back thursday. If I ever decide to buy a new laptop it's definatly going to be a Dell. Posted via RS Mobile
The only reason I am considering a dell is because, i received this coupon for 50% off
and with that this system comes with a 24" monitor, 8gb or ram, i7 cpu...and others
that is about 650 dollars already right
