Where/What/how - Decent HVLP spray gun
 

I'm looking for feedbacks of which spray paint guns you guys have or use.

Start with a cheap one, and learn the fundamentals of cleaning and mantaining your tools.

You also need to have at least a 60ga compressor and accessories eg driers etc.

devilbiss spray gun is more of a bang for your buck and they're around $ 400 plus.

Sata is more expensive side and they're around $800 plus.

Iwata is also on the expensive side, not sure how much but i know they're not cheap.

i know i'm missing some other guns but you can find most of them from CBS, white and peter and other tool shop that carry devilbiss.

how is Bynford? is it like miles apart comparing Devilbiss vs. Bynford?
what tip should I try first? 1.0 1.3 1.5 1.7?

Bynford is KMS's house brand, like Power fist is for Princess.

It is okay. As I say, it comes down to practice and tearing it apart and cleaning it. With a cheap one, you can throw it out if you have really screwed up. Also think about your work space like how to hang the gun and where etc. A cheap gun is good to mock up.

As for tip size, it also depends on what you are trying to paint.

Remember the paint is deadly.. so good respirator and protective clothing is a must.

^ yeah, I'm looking to invest at least a few hundred bucks into all equipments for my weekend hobby - that include a compressor, tank, spray gun, regulator, respirator, clothings. Maybe I'm looking to spend up to thousands.

I have a brand new Sata LM 2000 still in the box, in my storage. I have to check what the tip size is.

Any idea what it's worth guys? Maybe I can give BEEB a deal.

There's a new range of very reasonably priced power tools for painting from Ryobi available at the Home Depot.

You are kidding right? You are recommending the OP to use a plastic paint sprayer for home painting for automotive use?:haha: Hint: this is posted in the Vancouver Automotive Chat section.

To setup a decent setup:

1. protective tools would be about $800
2. compressor + all the plumbing would be about $1500
3. guns etc another $500 -1000
4. sanders etc the $500

The good thing is the compressor and protective gear etc have other uses.

I would suggest setting up the compressor portion first, then decide what you want to do.

Have you tried any hvlp guns before? Honestly, before you go rushing out and dropping 6 bills on a gun, try to try them first. For instance, Satajet, the moment you pick it up, you either love it or hate it. Everyone sprays differently. I despise Sata, I refuse to use it, but I know painters who swear by it.

I use an italian made, rebranded anest iwata for priming, my old basecoat/clearcoat devilbiss GTI for primer sealer, iwata w300 for water base color, and iwata LPH400 for clearcoat.

You can get iwata's these days for roughly 6-ish bills. I would suggest looking on craiglist and see if there's used ones. Devilbiss GTI's are good beginner guns, but don't make the mistake of buying the GTI-PLUS guns, you'll be sorry, especially if your not used to painting.

Don't get home depot ones, they have plastic insides and washer, and after 1 usage of solvent paints, they will disintigrate. They are made for latex based paints, but you may be able to get away with them if your painting water base.

Which btw, leads to the next thing. Solvent based paints may not be for retail selling somtime within a year. Do your research before buying a solvent gun and then finding out you can't purchase solvent based paints.

check out www.tcpglobal.com - I just bought an Iwata Eclipse from them - saved a tonne of $$ and they had a lot of guns too.
I showed the site to one of our painters here and they were all over it. Guns are cheaper than cost from some of our paint reps.

Hey man... I work at KMS - if you're gonna buy a bunch of stuff, phone up Darryl in Air Tools for a price - (604 522-5599). He can put together a deal if he puts it all together as a package.

My advice, start with a stinkin cheap package (http://www.kmstools.com/bynford-4pc-spray-gun-kit-1418) and move up once you know what you want.

I don't do alot of painting mostly just small stuff. I paint alot of my own sub boxes and instal related stuff but I use just a basic hvlp from lordco I bought a two gun kit with a single regulator one gun is a 1.3 tip the other is a 1.5. I use the latter for primers sprayable body fillers and unreduced clears.
The kit cost me 70 bucks with taxes and when I get better at it I will upgrade but for now they are great starter guns.

I thought people who paint their own cars use spray paint cans?

We use Sata's here at school and get a fairly good student discount like 200-450$ depending on what kinda gun you want.

If your interested I can see if I can get you the same deal.

Also your compressor cannot have any contaminants going throu the lines to avoid this you will need a 3 stage filter process or get a scroll type compressor ($$$$)

If your spraying water born 90% of the time you can get away with just your standard respirator with organic vapor cartridges. What you need to worry about is clear because it still uses isocyanate's to help with the hardening process. We have a fresh air system at the school which requires the 3 step filter process to produce class "d" air.

All in all your probably looking at anywhere from 750-4000$. A buddy of mine has done several jobs with just a gun and a mask in a hosed down garage and they've turened out better then have the crap that goes through our school
