The Mark of the Ne'er-Do-Well

When I went to go get my first tattoo I was 15, and my mom was paying for it as my christmas present (I told her if she didn't come sign for me to get it at a reputable shop I would get it done in an alley somewhere, which was total bullshit. I couldn't even ride my bike sans helmet without feeling guilty).

I'm lying on the table just getting a little guy on my back, which was really nothing but at the time it hurt like a mother. In retrospect (after getting a full back peice) it wasn't that painful but back then I was pretty sure the guy was tattooing me right on the bones. So while I'm lying there my mom is spending the entire time telling me how tattoos were for criminals and drug dealers, and how everyone she knew when she was growing up that had a tattoo was a bad kid, and how I better not tell my grandparents because they would have simultaneous heart attacks and then come back from the dead to kick my ass. I'm sure the artist hated her and by extension me, and I totally expected to have I'M A TOTAL GAY tattooed coast-to-coast.

So what about the people here on RS? Did your parents elders hate your ink? Do you think the way tattoos and the tattooed are perceived has changed over the years? What about the older generation of RSers (I'm looking at you Hypa). Do you think all those "punk kids" are making huge mistakes getting Taz playing basketball permanently drawn on their arms?
