New build PSU fail

So I put together a new build from parts I got at NCIX. I hit the power button and I hear a click and see the case fans and CPU fans move for .5 seconds. Try a few more times same thing. I reseat the ram and do a few more things butt nothing changed. I try again one last time and smell something burning and see smoke coming out of the PSU.

I grab a PSU from anoth comp and install it. I hold down the power button and all fans start to spin except for the video car one. As soon as I let of everything stops.

Now what should I do? I know the PSU is fried and have to sent back but what about the motherboard and the other components? are they fried? Will they be covered under warranty?

Don't think so checked a few times. Only really need to connect the power switch right to get it running?

I don't know your knowledge of computers, so I'll skip the technical terms:

There are 2 plugs that go from your psu to mobo...a big plug and a smaller one.
As for the video card..what videocard is it? some cards require additional power via a plug from the psu.

Both plugs the 20 pin and the 4 pin have been plugged in. The video card is a GeForce GT 220 and requires no plug. This is not my first build.I have a feeling the PSU took out the motherboard.

What brand of PSU? Specs?

Ferra 03-01-2010 10:28 AM

somewhat related OT question

aside from the 24pin connector, there is usually another 4pin connector u connect to the other side of the mobo labeled ATX12V.

I also plug it in too when i build pc, but some ppl said the extra connector is not necessary....is it true?

Check for any mobo shorts to your case. Your fried PS might have damaged something else also.

Manic! 03-02-2010 06:23 PM

I can't stand this.

Nothing looks bad on the mobo. I hold the power button down fans move I let it go it all stops. I don't know what to do.

PSU 24 pin -> mb
PSU 4 pin Molex -> ATX12V on the MB

perhaps try only have the bare minimum plugged in.
IE - no case fans, and maybe no HDD as well.. for it will still go into bios with no HDD.

do you even see post?
other from PSU..
improperly seated CPU and RAM will also produce burning smell

noventa 03-03-2010 01:15 PM

could your switch be damaged?

TOPEC 03-03-2010 01:32 PM

the bare min is hookin up the mobo+cpu(with fan ofcourse)+ram+vid car(if u dont have onboard)
the computer SHOULD POST, and u SHOULD be able to access BIOS.
