METRO VANCOUVER -- The woman who died after being found in the 4000 block of Rumble Street in Burnaby on Tuesday was actually a 16-year-old girl from Vancouver, Burnaby RCMP said Wednesday.

Her death has been linked to the death of a 17-year-old girl in Richmond on the same day. Alcohol or drugs may have been involved. The Richmond and Burnaby RCMP serious crime units are investigating the sudden deaths of the two youths. The girls were friends, and witnesses report seeing them together earlier in the night.

On March 2 at around 9 a.m., Richmond RCMP was called to a home on a report of a youth in medical distress. The girl passed away.

The girl found Tuesday near Rumble Street and Patterson Avenue was identified on Tuesday afternoon after the Burnaby RCMP appealed to the public for help, though police would not release details about who she was.

Police were called to Rumble Street at approximately 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday on the report of a woman in medical distress. Two Good Samaritans, who were driving by, noticed the collapsed girl and stopped to provide assistance and called 911.

She died in hospital early Tuesday. The girl was described as an Asian, or possibly aboriginal, female. She was approximately 125 lbs., 5'-8, with long black hair and brown eyes. The RCMP originally identified her age as being between 20 and 25.

She was wearing a white zip-up hoodie with a rose insignia on the front, black leggings and black suede ankle boots. She was also found wearing a silver heart pendant necklace. The death is considered unusual and suspicious, according to RCMP Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk.

Both detachments are in the early stages of the investigations, but alcohol and possibly drugs appear to be a contributing factor in the deaths. Police say there will be no further updates until toxicology results are received two weeks from now.
