I designed HCW myself (based on a blank framework template to make sure the CSS was compliant, etc) but others are just commercial themes (some more modified than others)
As far as tips, I think there are many resources out there. I'll just send you to my friend's site, he has gained quite a large following.
EDIT: Actually, instead of sorting through his blog posts (most of which are pitches to products) you might want to buy his book instead. It was co-written by an RS member too  | |
