An awesome day, indeed.

no surprise here, it's pretty obvious immigrants will become the majority in vancouver sometime in the next 10 years.

That was already true when I was in High School. In a class of 30+, you would be lucky to have more than 2-3 white people. And this was 10+ years ago.

It's good to see the cultural diversity in BC. However, a lot of the visible minorities are ignorant that they are racist against other visible minority groups or even the majorities. I find that they're more often the ones who are not accepting the multiculturalism here in BC.

tool001 03-10-2010 09:12 AM

^ +1, however bc aint that multicultural, its predominantly Asian/oriental. (toronto, or even montreal are more so)

The "visible minority" is the "visible majority" in Richmond. :D

It's not necessarily a good thing.

Dude, i'm living in Richmond (been here almost all my life) and i've always felt that way. Can't no black guy tell me I've never been in his shoes

Dan_Guy 03-10-2010 09:33 AM

Soon white people wont be able to get jobs.

Oh wait...Richmond is filled with Asian restaurants never willing to hire a honky.
Always found that funny, cuz "white" places hire everyone...

hahah thats true, but honestly why would you even want to work there. The work environment probably sucks and unless you can speak chinese no one is going to understand the person unfortunately. lol!

mikemhg 03-10-2010 10:16 AM

Like the OP, it makes me a little sad.

Diversity is great, but sometimes not so much. I just hope all the immigrants that come keep the Canadian culture alive, and respect Canada.

I must say that is one thing America does well with immigrants, people assimilate much more than immigrants in Canada.

It saddens me when immigrants come to BC and move to Richmond, and never bother to learn English. The more minorities that come here, the more segregation you start to see where certain backgrounds keep to certain locations and amongst themselves.

Heck even on Revscene you see Chinese immigrants bash Canada and prop up HK and China, MEANWHILE YOU ARE LIVING HERE.

Immigration is fine, it's just the bullshit people that come and have no intentions to assimilate or treat Canada as a different country than the one they came from is what spoils it for the rest.

RollingStone 03-10-2010 10:25 AM

I think many haters here just don't really know many immigrants. Once you get to know them more personally, most are actually very good people with a lot to offer. Some may seem "distant" but that's only because they don't speak English very well and thus don't feel comfortable interacting with mainstream society yet. To them, coming to Canada is like moving to a different planet. It can take decades for them to integrate fully. Every single immigrant that I know/have talked to that has been here for a while are very greatfull to be Canadian. Some of the nicest people I've met in my life were Chinese Mainlanders and first generation Indian. Paradoxically, the worst people I've met in my life were Trailer Park Caucasians from Surrey.

DuhDang 03-10-2010 11:07 AM

and some people have to realize that minorities are not just CHINESE

penner2k 03-10-2010 11:38 AM

So they are finally letting more white people move into Canada?

As long as the Chinese ppl coming here have that I have money so I am King attitude, they won't be welcomed.

PiuYi 03-10-2010 12:25 PM

once upon a time, the word "honger" was a derogatory term... now its used so commonly it just means a person from HK

but for some reason it still stings a little when a white guy uses it

Attitudes such as this just shows how little you know about Chinese (or any other cultural group of) immigrants. By far, the majority of immigrants are poor and are only looking for an opportunity to improve the lives of their families.

The stuck up type are a minority and and these types are present in every single group on the planet. People who think otherwise are just trying to find an excuse to vent their crude stereotypes.

Being a Chinese myself I am fully aware of the Chinese culture. I am in no means to say all immigrants from China are snobs. But at the same time there are no shortage of them with that attitude.

Have you been to Richmond? The immigrants there are certainly improving the lives of their families by driving around in $50k+ cars, buying properties and flaunting their cash in the Asian-style establishments.

Granted, these (rich) immigrants in Richmond are not reflective of all (Chinese) immigrants but they appear to be the majority rather than the minority, at least in this part of the region.

Whether the stuck-ups are a minority or majority, that just depends on how many and who you meet. I've met many well-off immigrants who aren't stuck up, but I definitely wouldn't say they're in the majority.

Hongers don't need visa to enter Canada where as Mainlanders do.
