Just picked up an Asahi Pentax 50mm 1.4 SMC...love it!

Just purchased my first manual lens. Paid $100 for it. Probably could've got it for less but it is in MINT condition! Came with both original front and rear lens caps. Doesn't even have any dust inside. Cosmetically and optically it looks brand new. Amazing considering this lens is about 40 years old!

Optically, it is awesome! I purchased a $13 M42 to EOS adapter with AF confirmation chip off ebay. The AF confirm was front focusing. Thanks to the MA on the 7D, I was able to correct the front focusing. Now it is spot on.

The lens is quite sharp at 1.4. At 2.8 it is just as sharp as my Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS.

And the built quality is stellar. All metal body. As good as any Canon L lens. I'm quite suprised at how much it weighs compared to its size.

The Bokeh is beautiful.

I love this lens! It is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Just a few issues though that I hope some person with more knowledge can help me answer:

1) at infinity focus, the aperture ring is stuck at 1.4. I cannot turn it.

2) Also, at any aperture other than 1.4, the metering is always overexposed.

I have a feeling the problem is because the inner element protrudes too much into the camera at infinity focus?

Also, does any know a good manual prime lens that's 1.8 or faster in the 20-40mm range?

Photo of my dog at F1.4 at ISO 1000:

pretty good. All metal, silver color. Just like the one on Canon lenses. I see no difference.

I bought the flange version so that it can depress the pin in lenses without the A/M switch. I think this gets in the way of the aperture lever when focused at infinity such that I cannot turn the aperture ring (it is stuck at f/1.4). I aperture ring can turn to all f/stops up to a focus distance of 7 ft. Not a huge deal though because I bought this lens soley so I can shoot at f/1.4. Anything greater f-stop, I would use my 17-55 2.8 IS

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I bought this lens locally off craigslist but there are many of these lenses being sold on ebay (although condition wise, probably not as good). According to my Nikon friend, M42 cannot be used on nikon DSLRs because the mount to sensor distance is too short on nikons. The M42 lenses protrude backwards into the camera as it focuses towards infinity. Consequently, it would hit the mirror in Nikon cameras. So i was told. However, apparently us Canon users can adapter Nikon lenses to our cameras

Just an update. i solved the shutter ring problem:

I removed some of the metal from the flange part of the adapter that seemed to be getting in the way of the aperture lever. Now the shutter ring turns all the way when focused at infinity.

Just ordered an adapter from eBay. How many of you Canon users here are using adapted lenses? We should have a separate thread!
