Question: About fuel pump blowing
 

I was talking to a girl from my work about how I drove to work with little gas, and she told me that it's really bad to drive with a quarter tank left of gas or less. Is that true? It didn't make sense to me because I figured not every person fills there tank back up when there gas is a little less than a quarter left she was also telling me a story about how her sisters cars fuel pump blew in the winter because she always drove with little gas, she knows a bit about cars but that just seemed wrong to me considering her sisters cars like a 1996 Chevy ( sorry I forgot which car) and it was in the winter.

-less gas = more room for condensation = rust and moisture in the tank

I've learned that having little gas in your tank all the time can cause your in-tank fuel pump to fail. Some of the in tank fuel pumps use fuel as a sort of lube an when there is air going into your fuel line because of the fuel sloshing around, it causes the pump to wear quickly.
I've experienced this on more than 1 occaision ha-ha, you know how it is: between paycheques, an runnin on 1/8 of a tank and so on. A GM shop mechanic told me this, he's a good guy and I believe him.

Damn she was right haha, yea like I was saying I won't be doing that anymore unless I don't have enough money at the time to fill up my tank

Yes it can lead to a shorter life expectancy for the fuel pump but not considerably and with the crap manufacturers are using for parts nowadays I doubt you would notice.
The reasoning is simple the fuel in the tank keeps the pump cooler and an 1/8 of a tank of gas doesn't fully submerge the pump. I never have more then a quarter tank of gas in my cars unless I'm loading up for a road trip and I've never had a pump fail prematurely.
Condensation and rust in the tank wont be an issue chevs haven't had steel tanks for well over a decade now.
