at that price range, either:

Canon Xsi or Nikon D5000 with kit lens

check www.photoprice.ca for prices.

You really should post here.

At that price range, perhaps pick up an used SLR just to learn on? Remember, a fancy camera doesn't help you make great pictures, just like how a nice top of the line snowboard doesn't make you Shaun White.

If you insist on new, the post above has some great suggestions. Personally I think, if you are new, you want a simple camera, so your main focus is learning how to frame the photo, rather than twisting knobs and playing with menus..

I'd go for used too. That's how I got my dslrs

Yeah. Get a used DSLR off craigslist. You can find a used Canon 40D or Nikon D200 at around $600-700. These two are a couple of levels up from my first recommendation but they 2-3 yr old models.

What did you end up going with?

Nikon has better in camera tutorials.

Also for the price the D5000 does have the same sensor as the D90, and D300 with a articulating screen and a quiet mode that may come in handy for those quiet places like a wedding ceremony
