u sure about that??

novus has its own fiber network... running building to building.

and novus = stupid fast

20 megs down AND 20 megs up. No other provider can even come remotely close for similar money

TOPEC 03-13-2010 09:11 PM

well i was told by a few people that novus uses shaw equipment

wouwou 03-13-2010 10:05 PM

^I believe Novus is optic.

and yes, Novus is only available to a limited areas in Downtown I ibelieve, fortunately.

ivanz 03-13-2010 11:43 PM

Novus doesn't use anything relating to Shaw. The connection is CAT5 or two pairs of your telephone wiring depending on how old your building is. This goes to a switch that is connected to a management device that is connected to a fibre feed. A select few buildings outside of the Downtown core use a wireless backbone.
As for cable, both use the same cable from the electrical room to your suite, but have their own seperate equipment.
Even the main gateway for Novus doesn't use Shaw infrastructure, they route all traffic through Peer1 in Harbour Centre. At one time they used the Telus backbone for a short while (not clear on the details).

As a rule of thumb, Novus is way better. Dedicated link instead of sharing all available bandwidth with your neigbours (Shaw) or relying on a CO being close by (Telus). They also give you a newsgroup account with giganews with mad retention. No traffic shaping from what I can tell either.

my friend bought a new condo last year and his complex uses novus. he said it's fast, and really reliable compared to shaw. never lost a connection or had to reset his modem or anything.

he lives in surrey.

hotong 03-14-2010 11:47 AM

my cousin has novus in his condo and its fucking fast.

SlySi 03-15-2010 12:53 PM

I use Novus.
Call them up and tell them you want to switch over to Novus from Shaw.
Tell them to match a promo.
They will do it. Negotiate and you will get a good price.

Yes. They are fastest and Newgroup access is a big plus.

as far as I know, my novus doesn't need any modem. It's a direct connection from the ethernet jack in the wall to my router.

tcneo 03-15-2010 02:39 PM

to OP, if you download a lot then maybe shaw is better. Since they don't have a hard cap. With Novus if you stay below the limit then you're good, if you go over you'll have to pay extra and they enforce it.

woooo 02-03-2011 05:41 PM

looking at setting up with Novus,
anyone with more up to date opinions?
looking at $30/ month for standard internet with cable 2 - 28 + HD include 3.75 for added sports.
Novus rep said to just purchase a box from FS or BB, any recommendations?

aznrsx1979 02-03-2011 08:13 PM

Novus works great and I've never had a problem with them. If they're going to have any down time for maintenance, they e-mail a few weeks in advance and do the work 2-5am in the morning.

c_loke 02-03-2011 08:47 PM

I hear they are pretty strict on the bandwidth. They closely monitor it.

SlySi 02-04-2011 09:03 AM

They are strict with bandwith usage.
110gb up and 110gb down
Anything over is $5.00 per 10gb.

Could be worse I guess.

Actually they just upped the cap recently.. 125gb up & 125gb down.
Still pretty good for my usage..

I haven't ever even gotten close to the limit so it hasn't been a problem for me.

ImportPsycho 03-26-2011 10:48 AM

novus reps are coming to my condo next week to offer
TV(sd)+ fiber optics for $35 per month
seems pretty good deal

FerrariEnzo 03-26-2011 03:23 PM

man.. maybe i should move downtown... i hate slow internet...

m3thods 03-26-2011 05:21 PM

^ it's not just downtown.

There are a few buildings that are incorporating FTH technology. My cousin lives in the Brentwood area and his building has Novus.

It's definitely going to affect my condo-buying in the future as Novus has crazy deals and speed from what I hear/read.

Just a heads up on HD boxes though- Novus does reprogram the same ones that you can get for Shaw, however if (for whatever reason) you need to switch back to Shaw, that box is no longer good to you. Neither Shaw or Novus will (or they say they won't) reprogram it. So you'd be out of a perfectly good HD box if you were even in that position.

nns 03-26-2011 07:25 PM

So don't mention it was ever on Novus. When you bring your box back to Shaw, it'll probably start downloading firmware once it's connected.

If the box was originally from Shaw, and you have a record of it belonging to you, then nothing is stopping you from forcing the PVR to download firmware if necessary when you bring it back to Shaw.

SoNaRWaVe 07-14-2011 06:58 PM

Sorry for the old bump. Anyone else recently switched over to Novus and has reviews on it?

Its stupid to stay with Shaw for $59 bucks for their Extreme package when Novus has the same offering for $37.50.

What I'm looking for is if being on Novus actually gives you speed closer to what is advertised or if its the same speed as Shaw.
