Blackberry model suggestions Alright, considering getting a Blackberry for my younger sister... Not sure whether she wants a data plan or not.. but I'm jut going to get her the phone straight up for her birthday. She doesn't like the Bold 9000 cuz it's too bulky, but knows she wants a Blackberry... (trend whore) lol. anyways, which one do you recommend? I have a couple in mind Blackberry Curve 8900 (javelin) - it's nice and sleeky and arguably one of the better looking curves. Small and convenient Blackberry Pearl- this is good, but typical and definitely not as valuable as Curve and Bold imo Blackberry Curve 8520- it's nice and small. But I rate 8900 > 8520 because 8520 gives me a little cheap looking exterior vibe. Plus I am not a van of the Square mouse pad, any one used it? Other versions of the BB Bold which are smaller- again, not too big of a fan of the Square mouse pad. Anyone else have any recommendations? I'm looking to spend around $400 the BB. Not looking for any other brands of phone |
Don't go for the pearl, if she's a trend whore I doubt she'll be happy with it either. I recently bought a 9630 tour off craigslist, theres a decent selection. It doesn't have wifi but it's a good looking phone and really not bad for something you can easily get under $350. It does lack wifi however which is probably the only drawback I say get the data plan though cos a blackberry just isn't a blackberry without it I don't know why you say you don't want the "square mouse pad" because that's one of the best things about the newer BBs cos the trackball isn't the most reliable mouse out there |
Yeah, if she's just getting it to be trendy without data or a need for it, dont get it. A blackberry without data is like a car without wheels. |

Yeah, I just put Pearl out there, but probably not going to get that. Wifi is probably a must, but I'll get her a phone anyways, see if she wants the data later. The 9630 looks decent too... Why didn't you get the javelin instead? Thanks for the opinion. Keep it coming |
8520 is fine especially if she's not going to actually use the phone for what it's intended. I have it and I like it just fine. The optical trackpad is way better than the actual trackball, not sure why you would think otherwise unless you haven't actually tried out the phone. It's a lot smoother and more sensitive than the trackball I find (my brother has the pearl). Also, if she's just getting one to be a trend whore, get her a cheap pearl. |
the pearl is garbage. she WILL get data after she finds out what BBM is and what she can do. of those choices go for the 8900. That being said I just got a 9700 and this thing owns all. lol |
^ Even 9000? |

The camera is a HUGE improvement. I'll go as far to say battery life is also much better. I've been bbm'ing and txting constantly as well as listening to music, and facebook occasionally for the past 24 hours, my phone isnt even half dead yet. Anyway, the 9700 is probably too much phone for the OP's sister |
^ same here I've been using 9000 for 2 years and I went thru 4 of them. Now I'm on the 9700 and loving it. But here's some take aways - if your sister's doing the whole trend thing she'll want bbm so let her know 1st that she has to pay 20 more a month to get berry data (bbm) - don't go near the pearl (just don't) - the 8520 (new curve) isn't bad it has a good trackpad (same as 9700 bold) it's prob the one you should look at (cost vs funtion) - the 8900 is pretty okay, however one of the biggesrt thing for it is the ball. The 8900 and the 9000's ball always get stuck. There's no proper way to keep it clean, but when it doesn't work just call jacob @jp cellular it'll cost like 20bux or something and you can have ir for couple of months before it needs another replacement. -the monther of blackberry's right now is the 9700 small size and trackpad, the camera's a huge improvment and overall it just works. So far I got no complains. all-in-all The best is 9700 cause it has everything 8520 would give what she needs Pearl don't touch 8900 if you want a ball Simple. Posted via RS Mobile |

^ I don't really go on rs on my computer anymore lol....m it's all bb LOL Posted via RS Mobile |
i hate how people buy phones based on trends.. lately it seems as if everyone all of a sudden wants to have bbm, im seriously thinking about switching back to a berry from the iphone, again. lol |
Anything that has balls, stay away LOL |
^ LOL  |
ahhh motherfuckkkkk, i'm using the 9000 and haven't been staying on top on the BB thing for awhile, hence the ignorance on the 9700. I dl-ed so many applications including Word, excel and powerpint and so many files already in there. don't really want to transfer all of that and take such a hazzle and time to do it =( You guys are tempting me to get at 9700.... FUUUUUUUUUUUU - How much it cost brand new on market? Roughly 500? |
Brand new 9700 (from Rogers) when my friend bought it last month was $750 with no contract and not a new customer. I think it's like $699 for new customers with no contract? Edit: I'm mistaken, $549 with no term, but I'm sure that's for new customers only. http://www.rogers.com/web/link/wirel...+11+4294967111 |

As for pricing, why not call rogers and renew your term? Also gives you reason to negotiate your plan if you think you can get better... You know, "if I do sign, what'll you give me?" |
Wait, how old is your sister? (legit question) |
Damn the new pearl 9100 would be perfect!!! But I don't know when we will get it. http://crackberry.com/blackberry-pearl-9100-images |

I think the 9630 looks better and has a better keyboard, also on craigslist prices are a bit lower than the 8900. Also don't find wifi very useful on a bb just personal opinion, don't use youtube myself which would probably be great with wifi. It's also a newer phone and thats always good :D and it has 3g capability... that doesn't affect me |
