| Voluntary Layoff
I am currently working full time and going to school at night, and it is very taxing on my social life and health.
I was wondering, after working at the company for one year, would it be possible for me to ask for a voluntary layoff, so I can at least be on EI, while going to school and looking for a part time job that's not as demanding?
Thanks

I know this is ironic but you will not be eligible for EI if you are going to school, unless it was a program endorsed by the HRDC.

Hmm.. I only need EI for a month or two inbetween semesters (2 x 2month intersessions). I'm taking the 2nd intersession semester off (July-Aug) and will be looking around for a part time job.
Right now I'm not able to, because I have used up all my vacation days for studying, exams, etc.
And I am also required to work overtime a lot (15-17 hr work+school days, come home at 11pm, eat, wake up the next day at 5:45 am, and it starts over again lol)

Hmm..no. I don't think that would work neither. When you are determined by HRDC to be eligible for EI, your first "EI payment" is a deductible, meaning you get $0. That in itself takes 6 weeks so by the time you go back to school, that will be week 8. After that, you will have to report to HRDC advising of such, resulting in being ineligible for EI.

try your best to see if you get less hours from the employer..EI doesn't seem to work in your case

They are allowed to go on EI and attend school if they were already attending classes and working at the same time before going on EI. Quote:

Thanks | You are asking your employer to lie. We can not tell you whether or not your employer will lie for you.
