The 02's and some 03's have a problem with headgaskets. My parents had a 2002 and they got royally screwed by Richmond Subaru. There was no recall, but a TSB was released that told dealers to use a new coolant that had an additive that prevented the headgasket from leaking.
My dad kept trying to tell Richmond Subaru that his had a problem w/ the headgasket, but they kept telling him everything was fine and normal. Sure enough, AFTER the warranty expired, they told him he had a leaking headgasket.

The MY02 I had was as reliable as a fork. There was no issue with it except for some minor parts. And I thought the headgasket issue was on the Phase 1 motors and not the Phase 2 (which the 02+ should have).
