Pay as you go plans?

got a friend who will be visiting vancouver for 4 month.

Typical cellphone usage:
1) need to use mobile phone only during day time (8am-5pm), night time will be at home using my home phone line.

2) does not need text message or voicemail or long distance.

3) looking for the cheapest rate for pay as you go, as well as lowest minimum monthly mandatory top up.

I called rogers: they offered: $20 minimum monthly mandatorytop up . ( daily 25cent first 5mins, and 15cent afterwards) or $10 minimum monthly mandatory top up (40cents/min flat rate )

Any other suggestions or experience on pay as you go? which company is better?

I always found rogers pay as you go the best, but that was years ago.
That being said, there isnt much variety when it comes to pay as you go..I think whatever they tell you is what you get. You cant add/subtract features like you can with a contract.

Give fido and all the other carriers a call and compare

Try 7-11's Speakout Wireless which essentially is on the Rogers network. The only drawback is minimum $25 top-up, however, the airtime expires in one year and they have the lowest airtime rates. My brother uses it, so if you want, he has a referral code that gives you $10 airtime bonus. PM me if you want the code.

We keep a spare SpeakOut SIM at home and let our relatives who visit from out of town use it. The 1-year expiry is by far, the best feature.

please check if i am correct with the following procedure:

1) buy a speakout sim at 7-11 and top it up at $25 ( i heard they dont sell sim card without a phone, but i want to use my good phone and not their crappy nokia)
2) it is ok to put this in any phone that takes sim card? (rogers, at&t, fido, t-mobil etc)

3) activate it online.

4) give to my friend

Yes, you are correct.

However! I don't remember if when you first buy the phone whether it comes with airtime or not. Either way, that initial $25 can go a long way, especially when the rates are already very competitive. Again, if you want the referral code, PM me for it, that way, your friend gets a bonus $10.
