2011 Mazda2 pricing announced. they undercut Ford somehow...

But the engine is downsized to 1.5L 100bhp to compete directly with Fit and Yaris class of vehicles. Transmission is either a 5 speed MT or 4 speed AT

There are 2 trims first there's the GX hatch at $13,995 and then a GS hatch at $18,995. The equivalent hatch from Ford starts at $18,249 and fully loaded SES hatchback starts at $20,349

the standard list of feature is impressive, standard on the car is ABS, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and TCS (Traction Control System). With 100HP at the tap I don't think TCS gets a work out very often but hey you never know.

The GX and GS differs in the following:
  • foglights
  • rain sensing wipers
  • "sport type" seat cloth
  • leather steering wheel
  • chrome exhaust tip
  • automatic headlights
  • side sill extensions (?)
  • alloys

Options you can add onto the GX model, while standard on the GS, are:
  • A/C
  • Keyless entry with a retractable key
  • trip computer
  • 4 speakers instead of 2
  • steering wheel mounted stereo controls
  • body colored mirrors and door handles

I am very interested now with the price tag set at this very reasonable range. My ideal setup is probably a GX with some options. :D

Best looking hatch in its class! <3 <3

freakshow 03-31-2010 10:56 AM

i like it!

gilly 03-31-2010 10:58 AM

hmm. almost the exact same prices when compared with a new honda fit. But the honda fit doesn't have automatic headlights or rain sensing wipers.

Rich Sandor 03-31-2010 11:01 AM

You might want to correct your title.. undercut means they're less than the Ford, which they aren't, according to your own price list.

Rich Sandor 03-31-2010 11:02 AM

And dont forget, MSRP is practically meaningless, as they are almost always extra incentives above and beyond that to bring the price down even more...

hk20000 03-31-2010 11:06 AM

I only post by what I see on their websites. If you have offers to the RS members why don't you share them with us?

They undercut a Fiesta's price, at MSRP, which makes my title not misleading.

Rich Sandor 03-31-2010 11:30 AM

The cheapest Fiesta is $12,999, the cheapest Mazda is $13,995

The cheapest Fiesta hatch is $18,249, the equivalent Mazda is $18,995+

I fail to see how they undercut Ford, other than offering a cheaper hatch version.

However I am in the process of putting together an in-depth product comparison between the Fit, Yaris, Fiesta, and Mazda2, to show which is the best value per model.

There's very little profit margin in new cars, especially the super cheap ones, so don't expect any kind of special incentives from dealers.. the money just isn't there. Maybe $200 or so, max. The best deals come when the manufacturer offers low rates and or cash back, and other incentives like Ford's $1000 costco, or the $1300-$3300 'recycle your ride' incentives.

I would love to offer Revscene discounts, but I have to setup a vendor/sponsor with the admins before I get banned.

wow that looks pretty nice

TOPEC 03-31-2010 12:02 PM

side sill extensions = sideskirts i believe.
but no rear window defrost is really a surprise.
what kind of car doesnt come with those commonly used convience features now a days.

godwin 03-31-2010 01:09 PM

Mazda = CVT
Ford = Dual Clutch

That's how they under cut Ford.

The mazda has more accessories/options but the Fit can still fit a lot more stuff I think. I'd buy the Fit for this reason alone.

fiesta has some nice touches tho, leather seats as well as sunroof is avaliable on the fiesta while the 2 doesn't have those options

But the pricing for both are based on the 5spd manual anyway.

More digging around:
Crash test, this car got EuroNCAP 5stars just like Fiesta

Awesome looking! Bring on the Mazdaspeed 2, and PLEASE tune down the smile on the 3 to a favourable one like the 2.

Looks better than a Fit, Yaris, and Versa

Great68 04-01-2010 05:39 PM

That grille still looks too Tamagotchi for me...

Mazda really shit the bed with their new designs. I know two people now that tested a new Mazda, loved the way it drove but passed on them because they look so retarded.

asian_XL 04-01-2010 06:44 PM

everyone is posting pictures with mods and nice body graphic.
The real thing will look just like Geo Metro with 4 dr...come on.

if you have seen the actual car, you will scream DO NOT WANT

In commemoration of the Mazda 2 (the Mazda Demio here in Japan) finally being sold overseas and in a dire need of media attention, Mazda releases two very special edition Mazda 2s for both the local Japan market and the export market.

Taking the Japanese phenomenon "Itasha" local here in Japan, a term commonly meaning an individual sticking stickers of their favorite anime / idol show onto one's car, causing viewer to feel "pain" looking at it (hence the term "ita" 痛い), Mazda has collaborated with KyoAni production in Japan and Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame to release these rather special-to-look at Mazda2s. "We wanted to tap into the market of the teenagers of today," said Akira Takizawa, marketing department chief of Mazda Motor Cars Japan, "and the latest hype over the 'itasha' phenomenon seems to be the dominating trend on the street amongst the young, it only makes sense"

These pre-ita versions will come in either a 1.3C-VT trim dubbed the "Akiyama Mio SPL" (for local Japan market) and in the 1.5 export model that will either come in Touring or Sport trim levels. "We chose the Family Guy for the export market because it truly reflects America's core family value," said Takizawa, " and who else is more jackass than Peter Griffins?" When we asked why Peter Griffin's nose is cut out by the front door handle he replied, with difficulty to suppress his laughter, "we can't help it he is too fat."

A Hybrid model featuring the Star Wars character called the "The Clone Wars" ,offering a drivetrain cloned from that of a Toyota Prius, was also planned but the deal between Mazda and Steven Spielberg had fallen through. "We had an argument over the phone, " said Takizawa, "he kept saying something ridiculous like how he is my father, while breathing really heavily, must be his age catching up to him."

Neither Seth MacFarlane nor Steven Spielberg could be reached for comments. Pictures after the jump.

i drove a yaris for 3 weeks a while back.

a car with that little horsepower is downright dangerous.

1.5L and 100hp = not going to be fun

hk20000 04-01-2010 08:40 PM

if it's 1-ton mark it probably drives like a AE85 or any old old corolla that used to be about 1200kg and 120hp...

it pretty much goes like a Fit and those are everywhere.

mekaw 04-01-2010 09:35 PM

the mazda 2 looked very plain at the auto show
