Mazda announces diesels for the U.S. market www.canadiandriver.com 2010 New York Auto Show NEWS HOME PHOTOS DISCUSSION New York, New York – Mazda will launch its all-new SKY Concept gasoline and diesel powertrains to the U.S. market in 2011 and 2012. The company made the announcement at the New York International Auto Show. “By launching our SKY technologies into the global marketplace, beginning in 2011, we will take a huge step toward accomplishing our stated goal of achieving a 30 per cent improvement in global fuel economy by 2015,” said Takashi Yamanouchi, president and CEO of Mazda Motor Corporation. The first introduction will be the SKY-G, Mazda’s next-generation gasoline engine, which will be the core powertrain in future Mazda vehicles. Anticipated to arrive in 2011, it is expected to boost fuel efficiency by approximately 15 per cent while also increasing engine power. Mazda intends to carry out the global launch of the SKY-G engine mated to the SKY-Drive transmission in the U.S. market in 2011, and then roll out the all-new powertrain to global markets. The new automatic SKY-Drive transmission achieves a direct-performance fuel similar to that of a dual-clutch transmission, and is expected to improve fuel economy by an additional five per cent. The SKY-Drive will be released in the U.S. in 2012. The company plans to incorporate the SKY-D engine into its next-generation midsize diesel car, allowing highway fuel economy better than that of today’s midsize hybrids, and a fuel efficiency improvement of 20 per cent over Mazda’s current 2.2-litre diesel. When launched in the U.S., it will meet strict Tier 2 BIN 5 regulations, and because of Mazda’s proprietary catalyst technology, does not require urea treatment to meet North American emissions standards. |
As fuel prices continue to rise I suspect that the diesel market will grow in NA. |

You can't suddenly increase the demand of diesel cars when the supply of diesel isn't so high. You must increase diesel production as there are more cars coming in. |
You missed the point.. Mazda system doesn't need SCR. The problem with diesel in North America is we don't have enough (truckers take the bulk).. not to mention we don't get subsidized for it like in Europe. Quote:

Actually no.. the issue with current generation of European diesels (all of them), is they won't pass the upcoming US emission laws without adding additional cost, ie adding the SCR/urea injection system... that's one of the reason why VW doesn't do Tiguan TDI. Quote:

Emissions.. Diesel is only profitable at high end cars because you the SCR is an extra $44000 and the diesel is an extra $5000.. it is easier to add extra $10k to the likes like X5.. much harder to add it to a $20k car (take a look at how well the A3 TDI is selling;)). Quote:
