Home Entertainment Q - PS3 - Receiver

Hardware

HD Tv
PVR
DVD/AUDIO Receiver
PS3

VIDEO: PVR Connected to TV via HDMI1
VIDEO: PS3 Connected to TV via HDMI2

AUDIO: PVR Connected to Receiver via Optical

Problem: How do I connect my PS3 (Audio) to the Receiver, better than what I'm using now (vga connection)

The Receiver has 1 HDMI OUT, 1 Optical (USED), and 2 vga/component, etc (red/white/green/blue) holes.

Any input would be appreciated thanks!

I'm currently using vga cables from the PS3 to the receiver as audio.

what does the TV have for audio out? can you run the optical from the TV to receiver?

you didn't mention how many hdmi inputs on the receiver...
if you have more than 1...connect both units to the receiver and then the hdmi out connects to the tv...
if not, connect ps3 to receiver via hdmi and leave the same connection to to pvr..you will need to have the receiver on to have sound though...

take the optical from your pvr and put it to the tv. Your setup is the same as mine but i have a hdbox instead of a pvr. when your watching tv you have the option of using the tv speakers or you can turn it off and run your reciever. Same goes with the ps3.

VGA does not do audio.

What model receiver is it?

What reciever is it? Your reciever might take HDMI audio. If it doesn't, then what model TV do you have? Most newer TV's should take HDMI audio IN and have an OPTICAL OUT which you can run back to the reciever. So you could use the TV as your switcher.

You basically want something like this:

Your TV will switch inputs between PS3 and HDPVR and send the audio out to the receiver, which sends it to your speakers.
Since your receiver isn't a 'proper' receiver (it doesnt have enough inputs to handle switching the A/V), and your TV also can't do the above, you need a new receiver. I was in the same boat as you, and getting a Pioneer VSX-1019 solved all my problems.

I have the Elite version of the 1019 and it's a great receiver for the price. Tons of features and SQ is decent. Not quite audiophile grade, but for gaming/movies/digital music it's perfect.
