Using Outlook Express from different Internet Connections? Hi All, Really newb question: I have my laptop all configured for my shaw/website email and uses shawmail.vc.shawcable.net as its outgoing mail server. If I want to use my laptop on a non-shaw internet connection, how do I configure the outgoing mail server? Is there someway around this? Thanks in advance! |
you'd have to use the outgoing mail server of what you are connected to... meaning you'd have to change it each time you change connections. (if you can find the info for that connection) you can always use shaw webmail to send stuff. (pain in the ass) |
yeah my campus is b/s and Outlook can't connect to the Shaw servers through it so I have to use webmail.shaw.ca (oddly it worked for a week when I got back this semester, then died. but I'm too much of a noob with that kinda stuff to figure it out) there is a tool Shaw has somewhere on their site (not sure if it's still there) that you can run to automatically configure Outlook to connect to the Shaw servers for the connection you have. |
Get a GMail account, then on your Shaw account on the laptop, change the outgoing/SMTP server settings to use GMail's SMTP server (instructions are on GMail settings). Then you can send from anywhere. |

As someone said before, you can use Gmail's mail servers to do the sending for you. Alternatively, see if you can use your campus mail server to send mail for you too. What campus is this? I'm sure there is one you can use to send emails from campus as well as other places such as your home. |
The odd part was that it worked for a week or so when I got back in January. So I figured someone cut me off somewhere along the line when they saw me pulling e-mails. Right now I'm at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ontario) and we have school e-mail accounts, but they run through G-Mail. I'll be trying what Soundy said in a second here, are the G-Mail settings generic? If so I'll post up the server infos for the OP to save him making an account. edit: alright so I have all that up and it finds the GMail servers but now it wants me to log in, but it won't accept my Shaw info (presumeably it's trying to log into GMail with this?) |

EDIT: use the setting provided by Gmail for your servers - don't use what's in the screen shot in the link I provided - that's for some other site but I wanted to use it to illustrate where to look for outbound authentication |

thanks guys, I can send now but I still can't receive anything |
you use the normal shaw setting for receive |
I've got it set to use shawmail.cg.shawcable.net (Calgary I think) on the default port 25, the same as I had it at home, but it's not working. |
try change pop3 port to 587. |
^ I just did, still get an error Unable to send or receive messages for the Shaw (xxxxx) account. The connection to the server has failed. Server: 'shawmail.cg.shawcable.net' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E Protocol: POP3 Port: 587 Secure(SSL): Yes Socket Error: 10060 |
wait, i thought they have different server name in each province? Posted via RS Mobile |
they have a bunch of them, cg is Calgary, tb is Thunder Bay, etc. I can't remember the BC ones but I used cg for years in Kelowna (needed to change it all up once we got a router and thats what my dads tech guy from work told me to use). |
If you're ever off of the Shaw network, you will need to change your mail settings. Outgoing: use whatever mail server you're connected to, or use a mail server that allows remote login (such as Gmail). Incoming: pop.shaw.ca (login with your regular Shaw credentials) |
^ tried that just now and switched the port to both 587 and 110, got this Unable to send or receive messages for the Shaw (blarg.means.yes) account. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Server: 'pop.shaw.ca' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F Protocol: POP3 Port: 110 Secure(SSL): Yes |
OH SNAP IT WORKS NOW. I unchecked the SSL for the incoming mail and did a bunch of the above suggestions and now it works. THANKS SO MUCH GUYS. No more shitty Shaw webmail for me! |
