d16z6 blowing tons of smoke Hi guys Im new to the forums My 1993 Civic si has started blowing blue smoke 24/7....low and high rpms, filling up the whole street with smoke  Before it only smoked in the higher rpms on the vtech. I am pretty sure that it is the piston rings... Could you guys help me out? has anyone experience something like this?? I don't want to strip the motor down and then find out that its something completely different :( any help would be much appreciated! thanks Mitch Ill get a video of the smoke tomorrow (motor has around 200,000k's on it I think) |
What color is the smoke? If it's like steam (white billowing clouds of smoke) then it's probably coolant (headgasket is gone). If it's blue-ish smoke, then it's oil (worst case, piston rings but it could also be something like a clogged pcv valve). |
You mean D16z6 :p If it does come down to piston rings or head gasket, just pop in another d16z6 since the motors are like cheap! |
....whoooops :o yeah d16z6 the smoke is blue, a solid cloud of blue.... |
Take it to a Revscene sponsor to get it diagnosed. Get them to do a leak down test. Don't drive it if you can help it, since oil will kill your cat and O2 sensor. |
ok I took out all the spark plugs and they are all equally black so im starting to doubt that its the piston rings.... what are the chances of all the piston rings going at the same time? im starting to think that its something like the pcv valve. any thoughts? |
i just went out to check the pcv valve... but there is none. lol. i have a cold air intake ( I didnt install) and there is just a rubber hose going from the valve cover to the intake... and there's also a lot of bypassing going on with a bunch of hoses :( ill take a picture later to see if you guys can help |
just pop in a new one, those thingies are cheap |
where exactly is the pcv valve...im getting confused looking at different diagrams |
The PCV on a D16Z6 is on the intake manifold. Right under the fuel rail. And yeah you do have one, the hose you're talking about is the breather tube. If you're burning oil at all rpm ranges then your piston rings are going, most likely. I have a z6 for sale btw ;) |
yeah i found the pcv valve, but it broke when i tried to pull it out... is there a trick to removing it? |
Well if it broke you'd need a new one its like less then 5 bucks. Usually the plastic just becomes brittle from the heat/old age. Normally I just wiggle them out gently with some pliers. |
