i wanna see if i can cheap out and use a clothes steamer to clean my hockey gear.

hmm....i dunno.

It sounds logical and all, but i guess the purpose of cleaning your equipment is to kill the bacteria deep within your padding, im assuming?

I just don't think a home-handy steam cleaner would be strong enough.
However....they do have detergents made for cleaning pads.....but then, you will never know if your equipment will come out in one peice if you put it in a home washer.

If you wanna be using a steamer....u don't wanna be using the steamer that you have on the pic of your original thread.


You want to be using a real steam cleaner...the ones that blasts steam to clean and grime and shit. Those are common too and i am pretty sure if u don't have one, one of your friends will.

The steamer in the OP's post is meant for getting out wrinkes out of clothes.
You need something that is heavy duty enough to kill the bacteria that is deep in your gear.

I thought about trying my shin pads in the washer with really hot water.

Another option is to pay for it.

i'll just get the o2 chamber thing done.
it's not a lot of money, something 40-50 but nothing beats free

Cleaning service at 8rinks is now $60 for a full set I believe..

Toshi says that you can put your gear in a regular washer as long as it is a front loader

Ive also heard people soak their gear in a bathtub with lysol

iBeest way is just air out your gear when you're done with it..
BUT putting your gear to dry on the heater in a shared hotel room with all your teammates is not a way to air out your gear :P

i air it out every game, but i've never washed my gear before and just hygienically speaking i want to wash it.

I wouldn't wash anything, the smell's going to come back unless you always dry your gear the moment you get home. I've sat next to guys who's gear just reeked because they just left it in their bags until the next ice time. I've thrown shoulders, elbows, shin pads (well, just the removable liner if you have one), and jock shorts in the washing machine and they've been fine. If it's anything else I'd just sell it and buy new, especially if it's gloves.

bath tub bud.

throw shoulders, elbows, shins, jerseys, socks, jock shorts, and pants into the bath tub, turn on the hot water and add a bit of detergent. grab a hard bristle hand brush and scrub scrub scrub.

then go air dry outside.


i've pressure washed my gear too which was a lot faster but make sure the setting isn't on too high because it can destroy your gear/stitching on the gear.
