Sensor dead pixels
 

I recently got a new 16-35L and was testing the lens when i found what looked to be a dead pixel. I thought it was something from the lens at first but it didnt look like it. Sure enough, when i swapped lenses, it was still there. It didnt look like dust on the sensor as well because it was way too sharp for that, usually dust renders as a blurred blob where this is a sharp white pixel. I searched up dead pixels and came upon this blog post:

I then bumped my iso to 6400 and shot a 1/30 exposure at F8 with the came on. I then opened the full sized image in PS and FUK counted 14 dead pixels! I searched around and after doing the manual sensor clean function, it went down to 5 dead pixels. I was thinking of sending the camera in for warranty repair but after a few more searches, found that these things pop up all the time and even if i send it in for pixel remapping, it'll show up again over time. PS raw converter fixes it so in the end, it doesnt really affect image quality. But it's a bitch and nuisance to think that after $3000 on the body u'd get stupid little things like this. Anyone else test their cameras?

Hmmmm....I'll have to see. I haven't noticed any dead pixels on my 5DmkII, but I'll have a closer look later.

Dead pixels are pure white. Hot pixels can be any color. Dead pixels are present regardless of the shutter speed or ISO. Hot pixels are only present during high ISO or long shutter speeds.

ALL camera bodies will have hot pixels after a certain ISO/shutter speed threshold. A dead pixel is more of a concern because it would be present at any ISO/shutter speed.

Like already mentioned, all cameras will have some hot pixels. My co-workers 7D he's had since it came out already has a few. My Canon 40D has over 10 hot pixels, but usually you can only see them at higher ISO. It's no big deal, really... Quick fix in PS.
