Props to the OP for handling it in a mature way, but yes, if the kids were big and violent, it could have ended badly.

They'll get charged with mischief and the driver will be ticketed for driving while not displaying insurance or no insurance. If he's a new driver then he'll lose his license.

So good for you for doing it right and not being a thug about it. The driver will get enough tossed his way to atleast not involve himself next time

LOL Highschool kids are always funny in a retarded way.. If I were doing the stakeout then I would tell the cops I would press charges unless every kids writes a 1000 word essay on why what they did was bad and present it infront of me one by one, I;m sure the parents would bite and make them do it.. LOL make the kid do more homework..
