Need help from all you computer gurus!
 
so since my computer is almost a decade old, its time for an upgrade. i found a computer from alienware which costs 1748 not including tax and was wondering what you guys think of it. the specs are as followed:

CHASSIS COLOR Cosmic Black, Alienware Aurora Chassis
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ i7 920 (2.66GHz, 8MB Cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
SECURITY SOFTWARE McAfee® VirusScan Plus – 15-Month Subscription
MEMORY 3GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - (3x 1024MB)
HARD DRIVE 500GB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD
GRAPHICS CARD Single 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon™ HD 5870
OPTICAL DRIVE Single Drive: 24X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
SOUND CARD Creative Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ Titanium
mother board is an intel x58
is it worth it and how long do you think it can last me? recommendations?

Good specs, but I have the exact same set up you have with 6 gb of ram and on a evga x58 board and got it for ~$1200 on craiglist + ncix sales..

The only thing that computer has going for it is that it looks cool and comes pre-built.

You don't need a sound card with modern mobos..

I'd say if you don't mind spending extra couple hundred bucks, then just get it, it is a fair price..

a better option would be to find similar parts on CL or ncix sales for cheaper.

1) Alienware Aurora Chassis is overpriced and ugly
2) Buy Win 7 and download other software
3) Hard Drive is slow, get a SSD as primary and 1T for storage
4) you don't need a sound card
5) Make sure your motherboard has USB 3.0

saw a acer desktop at bestbuy couple weeks going for $749, looks pretty loaded.

intel core2 quad q8400 2.67ghz
8gb ram
750gb hdd
nvidia gt220
windows7 home 64bit

edit: checked today, all sold out

i7-920 is outdated, its replaced by 930 already

i'm pretty sure you can build a system with the same spec for less money
