And yes, in SMB 3, you can get 1UP by landing on 9 enemies in a row, and every 3 after that (ie 12th, 15th, etc.) without landing on the ground or a block. A little-known trick is to use those bouncy music note blocks and vines between jumps, as both do not count as either.
Still got my SMB3 official Nintendo guide from like 1990. Best $3USD I (or should I say my dad) ever spent.

^ any speed-run or similar video is made using an emu and a bit of editing to make it into one smooth run.
I've seen some asshole Mario before, these levels are tame in comparison.
