Replacing Brakes
 

Would like to know where ppl get their brakes done?
I am replacing em on 2007 Sienna FWD, Toyota quote me $590.
So I am gonna look else where before I even consider that.
They told me they'll machine the rotor. But do I really need it?
Just need some good advise from you guys.

I do it myself. It's not rocket science.

Go to Lordco and buy the parts. Buy a service manual. Read. Learn. Save money!

Does your steering wheel shake when you brake at higher speed? If so, that will indicate that you need to either replace your rotors or machine it.

Otherwise I think you can get by just replacing the brake pads. Im pretty sure many RS sponsors can help you out for less than $590.

DIY brakes is not too bad. However you have to be careful not to stretch the hoses when the calipers are off the car. It's a crazy dirty job though.

IMHO you only need to machine the rotors if you feel pulsing. The general rule I go by is "2 sets of pads per rotor". Since it sounds like it's your first brake job for this car, I'd do rotors only. Who cares about the little circular grooves or whatnot. Your new pads will match the existing rotor profile after a few hours of driving anyways.

just spend the 20$ and machine them... its not like its a million bucks. my buddy's Honda rotors are so cheap, he replaces them with pads cause its cheaper than machining, machining will help with the break in period and will prevent brake squeel

$590? I agree with what's been said so far, try doing it yourself. I've done it before a couple of times but I did get help from my friend's dad who's a mechanic. He does repairs for other people, don't know how much he'll charge you though. PM if you want his info.

DIY certainly is best option, but I dont have much time at all, I'm working 7 days a week for this month. SIGH, otherwise, I'd love to try it out.
I'm gonna get some parts first and find a mechanic or brake shop to install it.

I can't recall if this is my first or 2nd brake job, but my odometer is reaching 90,000km.

I dont feel any shake during high speed braking, but I noticed some brake fade before complete stop, I guess thats mostly cuz the van's weight & toyota told me its below 30%.

Yet you can't afford $600 for your car...?

If you think about it 590 / 4 = 150 per side.
The brakepads with shims are about 80 per set so 40 per side.

I think it is reasonable. Considering shop hours, rotors, sensors, fluids and flush.. and it is a really messy and dirty job.

No to mention, if you get it done at your normal dealership, you usually get a loaner.
