Manual transmission fluid

Might be a noob question but im just wondering... Could it make my transmission "smoother" if I change my manual transmission fluid? im 1000km before im suppose to change it.. the car is a 2005 civic si.
Thanks

Mugen EvOlutioN 04-26-2010 02:23 PM

yes it certainly will

i change mine a lot more often than some of the members out there

definitely feels more smooth, maintenance schedule is only for a rough guideline for you to follow. Too many variables to count within when it comes to mainteance, depends how you drive, stop and go traffic, warm up/abuse ur car etc.

Phil@rise 04-26-2010 03:14 PM

The more you grind them gears the more you need to change the fluid. Same goes for aggressive shifting and spirited driving.

dipp 04-26-2010 05:17 PM

Oh that explain a lot lol.. Ill change it soon then Thanks!

You could call them, but I believe its $119.95.

If you are at all handy, you can try to do it yourself and save $100.

Yup. However, make sure you buy the correct fluid for your car! Not all transmission fluids are equal, nor are they all designed for every vehicle out there.

Yep, If its a 2005 Civic, Honda Genuine MTF is called on, approx $10 a bottle from the dealership.

Is changing MT oil much harder than changing regular oil? Thanks!

Mugen EvOlutioN 04-27-2010 07:33 AM

^

basically about the same to be honest

sonick 04-27-2010 08:22 AM

+1, easier actually; no oil filter to change. You just need to buy a fluid pump.

Usually it's just two plugs you gotta undo; the filler and the drain plug. Then let it drain, then re-fill.

ALWAYS undo the filler plug FIRST, so you don't get left with a stuck filler plug and an empty transmission.

Phil@rise 04-27-2010 08:59 AM

If you don't feel your up to it we can do it for you and its not that expensive.

It will be something along the lines of this.

http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread...&highlight=mTF

I had to go to home depot to buy a funnel and plastic housing...

dipp 04-27-2010 01:46 PM

Alright thanks everyone! I might try do it myself..

shenmecar 05-03-2010 11:10 AM

mfrt charged me $30 for changing my mt fluid.

sonick 05-03-2010 11:11 AM

^ Fluids included? Good deal, gear fluids stink. Small price to pay for comfort and convenience lol.

don't honda civic manual gearbox spec a normal 10w-30 engine oil fluid? Easy to do a flush, and an oil pump is needed.

lexluthor09 05-16-2010 10:52 PM

older style ones used normal engine oil.

the newer style use a specific oil which contains a bit more chemicals and additives than what normal engine oil would provide.

SOTY 05-18-2010 08:12 PM

use only oem fluid.

it took me 20 minutes to do it by myself, it's easy.

get a funnel and some tubing and get to it.

yea they before 96 on most models.

the easiet way to do it yourself is to get a funnel and fill it through that way.

Mugen EvOlutioN 05-20-2010 08:22 AM

basically drain and fill
