tiger_handheld 04-28-2010 09:55 PM

a model number would help.

but usually, hp, ships you two hamsters and a blue wheel - did u get those?

Toveri 04-28-2010 10:06 PM

If your router/modem works - everything plugged in and set up, all you have to do is plug that blue wire into your laptop, it should work.

terkan 04-29-2010 12:09 AM

yes just plug in the blue cable into the corresponding jack, i'm assuming ur other end is connected to a router or cable modem?

you have to make sure you use the "blue" cable software, not the "gray" cable software.

Haha yeah i was that high i put it in the wrong forum.... Its a g60-610ca. I had my computer hooked up to the internet and it was working up until i unplugged the blue cord and put it in my laptop. I was thinking thats all that was needed or do i need to do something since its a brand new laptop? Terkan its plugged into whatever Ive had from shaw for the past few years. That little black motorola box

Just plug the Internet cable into the back of your laptop. O and make sure your network settings are correct.

Try a simple restart after you've plugged it in! :)

You don't necessarily need a router to use the laptop with Shaw. (unless you want to use the wireless function) You shouldn't have to register the laptop with Shaw either. All they care about is the cable modem and that's the only thing that needs to be registered with them. They don't care about anything on your side of the modem since it's not their responsibility.

If you look on the left side of the laptop, the network jack is just next to the VGA (monitor) port. Plug one side of your cable in there (and if it doesn't fit or looks too small then it's the wrong type of cable) and the other side into the network connection on the Shaw modem. You should see the little network icon in the system tray (by the clock) try to connect and eventually get an IP. After that, it should work.

Maybe you bought one of those laptops that don't have Internet function

maybe you need to install the drivers for the Ethernet port

yeah sorry that's what I meant about registering. I will try this, thanks :) I plugged the blue cord from shaw's modem that I had originally had hooked into my computer up until yesterday into the only spot on my laptop it would fit. It was on the left side. but it didn't work so that's what got me confused cause I had thought it was that easy.

vafan it has internet cause I can see wireless no prob, tons of it, but I don't have anyone's passwords :( There's even a motel I could connect to just a block away

Gumby 04-29-2010 09:28 AM

saucy, when you connect your laptop to the modem, a light should light up on your laptop right beside the cable. If it doesn't light up, it means that your network card isn't working/installed properly. Perhaps you need to install the drivers for your network card?

saucywoman 04-29-2010 09:39 AM

^^ there was a yellow (I think) light right at the hole where I stuck it in yesterday; that's what you're talking about right?

Presto 04-29-2010 10:55 AM

Have you tried power-cycling the modem?

Dragon-88 04-29-2010 11:07 AM

Your notebook might also have a hot-key for the internet to turn on and off this is for wireless. Double check that this isnt in the off position. Either than that you notebook should automatically work with internet no problem.. Check your wireless connection and see if there are any connections around you. Its odd that your system doesnt work on the net.. It should be plug and play.

saucywoman 04-29-2010 11:40 AM

well so I turned my computer on over lunch and it connected to the internet, so I guess all it needed was a shutdown restart after plugging in the cord. It was as easy as I thought, lol.

thanks to everyone for all the assistance :)
