I did do co-op. It's not getting a job that's the problem. It's switching domains (ie doing something that is unrelated to your current/past roles). This is where I'm getting killed.

For example, someone who designs circuitry for electronics is going to have a helluva time trying to get into designing transformers, even though both roles require an electrical engineering degree.

For Mechanical it's even worse. Sales is different from design, which is different from oil + gas, which is different from construction etc etc. They expect that somehow you magically know what you want within 1-2 years of grad.

LiquidTurbo, are you an engineer yourself?

LiquidTurbo 11-09-2010 08:37 PM

Yes I am Mech Eng with background in O&G, Marine, and Refrigeration.

Summer is never a good time, with the boatloads of fresh grads eager to bite off something they can't chew.

It is very difficult to find a job in the engineering field. I personally am a CAD designer and it took me about 6 months to get the job I have now working at a Engineering firm. Craigslist was a big help, yet I learned fast to get my name out. It doesn't matter if the "requirement" says 2-5 years experience, send them a email anyway. Worse case is they throw it in the garbage and you never hear from them, or they send back an email saying they're not interested. Yet emails only go so far, something better would be to do cold-calls, therefore you can talk to someone (HR or management). It's a long process yet eventually there's a job there for everyone.

If your not strapped for cash and you are willing to put in some time. Most places will gladly except "volunteer" work, it will give you experience, it will give them an extra hand on projects therefore both sides will benefit. And you never know, one of my classmates volunteered for 2 weeks, got hired part-time, and now is working full-time at the same Architectural firm.

First of all, build a portfolio of all the engineering work you've done. This could be school or hobby projects. If you don't have any experience, then start hacking some work up on your spare time. Or you can maybe take night courses at BCIT?

Don't worry about experience too much - show that you're able to learn and pick up new skills. Engineering is not about knowledge, it's an acquired skill to learn something new and apply it. Try to harness your existing skills to create leverage on yourself against other candidates.

Another tip that I recently figured out is to apply for shittier jobs and get a grasp of what people look for before applying for the bigger jobs. I made that mistake after working for 7 months after grad, then applied at Tesla and messed up the interview when they flew me down to California :(
