Study: Neanderthal DNA Lives On in Modern Humans

http://www.time.com/time/health/arti...xid=aol-direct

Those that don't have time to read the whole article, I think this is the highlight of it:

Quote:

Researchers compared the Neanderthal genome with the genomes of five living people: one San from southern Africa, one Yoruba from West Africa, one Papua New Guinean, one Han Chinese and one French person. Scientists discovered that 1% to 4% of the latter three DNA samples is shared with Neanderthals.

Humans and neanderthals diverged from the same ancestor, no really they share similar DNA?

J____ 05-09-2010 10:52 AM

i thought this was a given. hell we share same dna as chimps. what a pointless article

I think 99% of our DNA is the same, IIRC.

seakrait 05-09-2010 01:31 PM

the point is that after the Neatherthals broke away from the human evolutionary lineage (ie: they became their own sub-species), they and the further developed humans intermingled and sexed thus us having Neaderthal-specific DNA in our bodies.

they're not saying that we have a common DNA because we have a common ancestor.

didn't seem like some of you actually read the article, this image describes it better what the studies said

i think the general tone in academia is that there was never interbreeding

how reliable is the source... theres been so much back and forth debate nothing really concrete comes up

twitchyzero 05-09-2010 11:49 PM

too bad..i always thought h sapiens wiped out neanderthals by primitive warfare...not breed with them.

It's just a theory..but some think they got assimilated... via Neanderthal admixture hypothesis.

Churchill believes our early contact with our shrunken, strange-looking cousins was probably complex and varied and was likely one of many factors that led to their extinction. "I suspect that interactions were different all over the place, much like the European colonizers had different interaction with other races. In some places the interaction was peaceful and there was interbreeding and cultural exchange, and in other places it was pretty violent." In other words, the Neanderthals may have disappeared, but the species that Shanidar 3 came into contact with in his Iraqi home — a creature capable of both cooperation and violent confrontation — is most certainly the same species that dominates the globe today.
