wireless router question

Hey guys, quick question here:

I have a dlink N router and when I'm playing ps3 the connection and status never goes passed 77%, which makes my gaming lag out like no tmr, myy connection is secured with a wpa key and no one else uses the signal besides me, it used to stay at 100% and I had no problems while gaming. I was wondering what can I do to make my connection stronger? The router is fairly new, and I have tried refreshing lots of times. If anyone could giv me any input that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

to make your connection stronger go wired, the best thing
go wired and check if you still have the problem

Wired is always better. You can try changing the channel that your access point uses.

By wired you guys mean I gotta connect my modem straight to my ps3 ? But my pc where my routers linked up is upstairs in my room, and my ps3 is downstairs. I sound like a total noob lol

the connection to the router shouldn't be making you lag, make sure there's nothing running on your computer that could be using the network.

forward your ports?

MDMA 05-10-2010 11:10 PM

Iv made sure nothing running on the computer is using the network, how do I "forward my ports", the next best idea I had in mind was reformatting my pc, since it has been running slow in general for the last little while probly crammed with viruses, would that help at all? I really don't wna have to shell out the cash fir a new router

IMO, the wifi chip in the ps3s are pretty weak. My laptops have full signal strength when placed next to the ps3, yet I constantly lag and dropped connections.
I even tried moving my router to the same room only to have the same problem. I eventually gave up, moved my router back and bought a 100ft network cable. Never a problem since
(I have a first gen 60gb, btw)

www.portforward.com

not sure if it'll help, but it won't hurt.

my Asus wireless n router RT-N13 gave me good connection for my PS3.

I used to have D-link for weak signal and got cut off from time to time.

RT-N13 gave me solid connection with better range than my old d-link.

I play MW2 every night.

Bump,

So I decided to hardwire my ps3, I connected the modem to the router and the router to the ps3, and its stil fukkin lagging! Is it time to get a new router? Or am I doing something wrong with wiring? Any input is appreciated,

if the modem and router are very close to each other try hooking up your ps3 straight to your modem. If the lag is gone is probably your router. Make sure your router has the latest firmware (you can post your model here if you want).

If it still lags it could be your modem (old?). What type of modem are you using? You can try hooking up your PC directly to your modem and run a speed test (speedtest.net or speedtest.shaw.ca) and see if you are getting the speed you are paying for.

^ thanks so much for the input, I connected the ps3 directly to the modem and it worked like a charm! Guess that means I gota buy a new router, what would you recommend? I currently hav a d-link dir-615 N router and its garbage lol, again thx for the input I'll be sure to giv u a thanks wen I'm on my pc

well like I said, it doesn't necessarily means your router sucks. Could be outdated firmware, although I have read some bad reviews about that router. If you don't really need wireless N then perhaps you can try the linksys wrt54g, it's wireless G and everyone seems to be recommending that one and installing a 3rd party firmware and it goes for fairly cheap now.

I have the wrt54GL version running on Tomato firmware and I haven't heard any complains from my family who uses wireless. Of course, I use wired connection and any hardcore gamer will tell you do the same but if you must use wireless and it must be an N router you can try ecsw's suggestion on the Asus routers, I hear they some are pretty good. Probably best to buy them off stores that have longer period of return/exchange

try power cycling the router more often as well.
