DIY Leatherman Keychain Mod

I stumbled upon this mod on another forum and thought I'd give it a try. What you do is take one of those simple multitools (in this case a Leatherman micra) and take out some of the tools you don't need and replace them with your keys. You need to trim down the keys and drill a 11/64 hole into the end. Here's how mine turned out.

Guides on how to do it are here. http://edcforums.com/showthread.php/...m-LM-Multi-Key!!

And the impact of the added weight on the ignition switch is...?

All you need is a hacksaw, drill, and basic tools to get the thing apart. The entire tool is super light still. Lighter than the average handful of keys people carry around.

kinda neat if you're into multi-tools and gadgets.

JSALES 05-17-2010 08:18 PM

i would rather try doing that on a balisong (butterfly knife)

Cool concept, but you've masterminded a major stress concentration. In time, I almost guarantee you'll leave a busted key in the lock.

Or keep your locks well lubed (use real grease, not WD40 or lock de-icer). You might want to carry a full size leatherman to pull the busted key out.

how hard is it to pull the keys out of the slots?
and it looks like every time u need to open a door, u would need to open up the whole assembly to flip the key out.

It's nice if you carry a Leatherman already... it'll eliminate clutter and weight. I don't think it'll do anything to find your key faster, as you still have to open it up and fumble for the right key.

tool001 05-17-2010 09:28 PM

just remember to leave ur key at home, when u go to the airport...

SpartanAir 05-17-2010 09:42 PM

That is neat...though leatherman micras are still kinda heavy compared to any key...though it's not much different if you were to have a bunch of keys or keychains on your keys...

Raid3n 05-17-2010 10:25 PM

not to mention you'd either have to memorize the specific key's location in the tool, or colour code the keys...

This. I suppose if you don't go clubbing or fly often it wouldn't be a problem.
