How competitive is to get into BCIT's Medical Radiography Program?
 

I'm interested in enrolling in the Medical Radiography Diploma program in
September of 2011. Just wondering if there are any revsceners that got into this program in previous years and what their credentials were. I exceed the high school requirements and have pretty decent Uni marks although in a completely different field of study. From what I hear this program is very competitive to get into but I want to get some first hand info.

I recently completed my undergraduate degree in Forestry at UBC and I
am considering an early career change. I'm still fairly young, have no debt and according to the bcit survey will graduate around the average age at 25. The Forestry industry is completely screwed and will be for a long time in my opinion and I'd rather take the extra few years and pursue a career in healthcare where jobs are a lot more stable and will be in higher demand with an aging population. (DOH!)


A few general questions about the entrance requirements:

1) How many students are typically accepted into this program every
year and what types of backgrounds do these applicants have? I'm assuming many of them are graduates from a science: biology, general, kinesiology, health sciences degree.

2) What do you think my chances of getting in would be?

-English 12 (80%) B+
-Math 12 (83%) B+
-Physics 12 (74%) B
-Biology 12 (84%) B+
- UBC Graduated with Bsc. in Forestry, Participant in Co-op program, and Minor in Business (Cumulative average 76.4%), (80.3% on all 300/400 levels)
-20 months of work experience working in a professional environment
obtained through Co-op internships
- I have volunteered in a seniors home during high school and will
complete 40 additional volunteer hours this summer
-Will complete CPR Certification training prior to application due date

On another note I'm currently accepted to the architecture and building sciences diploma program at BCIT for the sept 2010 enrollment, but I also am really iffy about the future of the construction industry. Job prospects don't look too good and wages aren't even that great for new grads or even just finding jobs in that field. I don't want to be in the same position I am now, two years down the road. So if I decide to go for Radiography I will withdraw from this program and keep working a crap job for one more year to save money.

have you looked at the programs out of Stenburg College?

i find you can get the best answers if you email the advisors or meet with them if you have complicated questions

k first off, you need to decide for yourself what it is that interests you. this sounds like you're just going with whoever takes you, no matter the discipline.

y do the arch sci diploma if you already have a BSc. Find a certificate or diploma program that will strengthen you bachelors, not something completely different. I have a group of friends that graduated from arch sci @ bcit (bachelors). arch sci is A LOT of hard work; sleeping and working at the studio 24/7 in fourth year if you decide to do so. I'm pretty happy I didn't get into arch sci after seeing what they do or will have to be able to do. most of the graduating class are going on to masters in different provinces.

I'm not familiar with the nature of your BSc, but it sounds vastly different than medical radiography. To my knowledge, if you already have a bachelors it's very easy to get into competitive programs such as medical radiography. I experienced the same thing when i applied for radiation therapy and didn't get in. I am currently in forensic sciences at bcit and enjoy it a lot. At least 8/10 people in my classes already have a degree and is doing a certificate, or are professionals (such as officers, nurses). I am on schedule and doing very well to finish the part time program (degree) in 2 years by taking a full load.
